Squabbling about the Lancer
Yeah I've noticed the same thing. It's not so much that because I got a subaru I think this way now, it's more that I thought this way thus I got a subaru. It's also cause in Calgary people haven't had a lot of success with lancers, but that could change if the guy who bought my kit gets it up and running strong.
Lol, I'm the last person who would hate on lancers, hell I had over 5000$ in mine before I got rid of it (closer to 15000$ if you took into account the interior, exterior, suspension, labor, etc.) I just want to see people do it right and actually have a car that runs the way a turboed car should, and also not have naive aspirations about a car that was designed to be fuel efficient. The guy who bought my kit was great, he did it because he wanted a faster car, not a fast car.
For all the talk we have about newbs needing to search it doesn't help when they run a search and they see this.
I take things too serious sometimes and I apologize for that. Believe it or not I'm holding back most of the time. But nothing tweaks my nipple like this subject. I hear my father in your posts telling me why what I do with my life and car is pointless... how's that for freudian bs?
Amby, I know you don't hate the Lancer. You did a great job moding your's and then going all out getting it dynoed... more than most do. And you came very close to turboing it. But there are guys on here like me that still love this platform. I've dumped nearly as much money into my Lancer as you did yours but I don't hate on the very subject matter of these boards even though I know that my overall gains have been 0 or slightly better. (I still contend that the mods do more to open up the mid and high rpm range and that doesn't always corrilate to hp and torque gain)
I'm in the process of refurbing a used turbo kit, have helped and been helped by many on these boards and have been here a long time, and I've never seen what I've seen in the past few days from Mods and Gurus... which has been the wholesale ******* on the first gen Lancers and those that choose to turbo. In the end it's a choice. Whether it's a good choice or a bad one, which was the premise of question posed by the OP, has somehow become an arguement or discussion on whether a stock N/A car should be turboed.
I'm sure that in the real world you guys would be the type of guys I'd love to have a beer with and if you are ever in Northern VA drop me a line and we can chill... I mean that. And to anyone else on the Lancer boards that invitation is extended.

I don't think anyone here is trying to be offensive or in any way direct what people do with their cars, hell I received flak from my friends when I got rid of my car but I did it anyways cause I knew it was the right choice for me. I'm simply giving my opinion on the matter just like everyone else. Part of it is because I get a little irritated when people don't tell the whole story. Before I dynoed my car, everyone was saying how I'd get these great numbers (ranging from 120whp to 140whp) and how my motor was well put together and all this kind of stuff. As soon as I got the results people instantly jumped off the bandwagon and either called into question the credibility of the dyno or suggested my car was a POS. The same basic thing happened when I announced I was going to turbo my car. Everyone said that it'd be stunningly fast and reliable, yadda yadda yadda until one member (who will remain nameless) was willing to tell me his own experience and actually suggested against it even though he himself was turboed. After thinking it over and talking with my friends and family I decided it wasn't the right decision for me because I couldn't deal with any more problems, my motor blew once and if I had any other problems like oil leaks or exhaust leaks I think my head would have exploded. My car was also the base model lancer, so I had no AC, power nothing, no ground effects, no ABS, etc. had I had an OZ I might have acted differently. I still respect people who modify their lancer, but only if they do it for the right reasons. This is why I tend to be harsh, I find it's the only way to get the real reason out of people and actually see how much research they have done and how dedicated they are to the plan. Some people do it purely to say they have "X hp" which is ridiculous in my mind and simply puts them on the path to disappointment or failure. I don't hold any grudges (for the most part, there are some people I simply dislike) and at the moment I'm sure I could have a beer with anyone here.
