Mitsubishi's stock timing belts are fine and durable, no reason to go aftermarket. Based on what you described, I'm guessing you didn't replace the tensioner when the belt was last replaced.

I kept my OE one in there, just greased it up when I replaced my T-belt @ 75k. It and the belt were in prime condition...
