Break in Period
Like stated before, the OEM break in procedure isn't just for the engine. They take the diffs, tranny, suspension and everything else into account also. Like amby said it was probably meant for race prepped cars that already had everything else broken in. So your engine may last a little longer, but your tranny may bite the dust. That's the way I look at it. Wouldn't be able to tell you how I broke my car in since I got it used, but I WOULD have followed OEM instructions and not heresay from friends and some mediocre website from a guy claiming to build racecars.
I babied her for the first 100 mi by keeping her under 3k RPM's and also making sure I don't cruise in the same gear for too long. Then once a day I would open her up to 5K RPM (after the engine was nice and warm of course) and did this till 300 mi.
After 300 mi, I started giving her but kept it under redline. Changed the oil at 500 mi.

The manual say's 500 miles break-in. I waited till 1000 before even passing the 4k rpm mark. Ive had it for 7 months its got almost 8k miles. Two oil changes using mobile 1 and I still have not redlined it, done a burn out....Nada crazyyy...
Its the first car I buy with my own money so this is my baby. One day it will drive hard....nut not for the moment...

Do you realize that the guy is talking about MOTORCYCLE engines. It's not the same.
However the dealer didn't tell me to drive it like a grandma. He told me to use the the rpm band and vary the engine rpm and not to drive in the same gear for too long.
