Almost bought an 09 today. Help me out here.
Went to the dealership to get some numbers for a new car, since my wife's current vehicle (03 Explorer) needs $75 every other week to fill up. I had intentions of looking at the 08's, since it has a smaller engine and will use less gas.
Well, I thought I went in there knowing what I was doing, but after thinking about it now, I realized that I made a bunch of mistakes and want to get EvoM's opinion.
We were mainly focusing on the monthly payment, and didn't really think of what we were actually going to be paying for the car in full. After them getting our info and such, they gave us these numbers...
09 ES Sport w/SSS?, no navi
MSRP $19,290 (we didn't even bargain price)
$5900 Trade In (We owe $5990)
$19290
- $500 Loyalty
= $18790
- $5900 Trade
= $12890
+ $896.90 (tax & tags)
= $13786.80
+ $5990 (pay off trade)
= $19776.90
0 Down, 340s-350s
$500 Down, 330s-340s
I was thinking of putting $3000 down, which they said would lower it hopefully $260s-270s, which is still a little higher then we want.
Those payments were based on 72 months.
I am so lost and feel like they have all the control over me. Help me out guys.

Sounds like they are charging you aroud a 8% interest rate. If your credit is not that good that rate is ok. But if you have a high credit score you should be around 6% or less. If you are happy with the deal and like the car then buy it.

I haven't checked KBB yet, because I hear that they don't even go by that and use a black book? And the dealer also told me that right now no one wants a gas hogging SUV due to gas prices, so he couldn't offer me more.
well if you didn't sign anything yet, you still have time to go back and tell them you don't feel comfortable with those numbers.
1.) definitely negotiate a lower purchase price to being with. you're buying a lancer for christ sakes not a ferrari. you have the power here.
2.) KNOW what apr you can get with your credit. don't let them tell u otherwise. you can always finance with a bank and not thru mitsu financial.
3.) find out if you're getting close to the value of the trade in with edmunds or kbb prices. definnitely do your own homework and STICK with the numbers YOU find. don't let them tell you your numbers are crap. they're full of crap.
other than those super basic stuff good luck

Click the link below for NADA and select the trim level of her Explorer and then enter the miles and it will show you some values.

Well if you can deal with having an 08 do it, because I thought
was doing their "time to rally event" where all 08 Lancers have 0% interest(considering you have good credit)... Might be able to get a 08 GTS for less than an 09 ES.... Just a thought.

I would, but I can't find any 08's around me.
If I were you I would lookup what other people have paid and go from there.

because you NEVER should negotiate on monthly payment.
