WRC Question
WRC Question
Getting hooked on Speedvision's coverage of the WRC.
I do have a question
What is that noise the cars have during corners, and exit of corners? Is that a braking noise? it sounds like an electric motor, almost like on remote control cars!!
thanks,
P.S.: Anybody from Michigan over here?

Hi, that is because the motors are very specials; but I think that the car with that noise is the Peugeot 206, maybe is the Turbo or the intercooler, Im not sure what exacly you mean, but the Peugeot is the one who sound like a remote car
The lancer sounds like a rude car, but is not fast enough (YET)

The whining noise you're hearing is the transmission/drivetrain. The whining is produced by the gears meshing together. The Pugeot does have a distinct sound because of the combination of this and it's extremely loud turbo hiss, but all the other cars produce the same drivetrain whine.
I think you mean the chirping noise that all the cars make. The noise that they make is from the Blow off valve for the turbo.
BOV: Blow Off Valve. Also known as the compressor bypass valve. Under boost, foot off the gas, the turbo is still spinning at high RPM. The BOV opens and dumps (via the dump tube) the inlet pressure.

Might I add that I think the BOV releasing pressure has to be one of the most beautiful sounds related to cars. ::swoons:: Too bad I don't plan on going turbo...ever. Too bad I don't have speedchannel (speedvision) or I'd be all up on its junk.
Not in the Lancer. I wanna get a relatively mean NA. I want a driving car that can move a little and handles well. I never race anyway.
If I were to have a turbo car I'd (ideally) like a 1g GSX or an ever-coveted Galant VR4. I'm a sucker for older imports.

If its the chirping sound, then its definately the blow off valve. Btw, the BOV release does get addicting, I can't help it sometimes. The look you get from other cars when you release it next to them. It sounds real sweet if you vent to the atmosphere, too bad it hinders performance a bit.

Watch this video!

Notice how the brake noise when the car is almost stationary after the spin, sounds very similar to the sound the car makes when it is decelerating rapidly. That to me indicates a braking noise.
Mind you even though the car is stationary the ALS is still engaged and idling pretty high.
Also it's my understanding that most WRC don't have blowoff valves, they use internal wastesgates and the valve difribilation (sp?) causes the chirping you hear in rally cars. I think they use internal wastegates because of the higher internal manifold pressures... they start chirping in excess of 2.1bar or thereabouts.

Billy,
Thanks for the video.
However, the sound I am referring to is not that one. That is like chirping, it also felt like braking noise to me. The noise I am talking about can be best described as an electric motor of a remote control car.
thanks
