Thanks for the responses. I believe you all as well as my dad are correct. Right now, a NEW car is a bit out there as far as expenses. A used one though would be a good start for learning how to tune and how to mod, AND get pretty good gas. The big problem is that I have is that for 3K Im a bit limited in my options. I want something that I can get under the hood and tinker around with, and not have it die. and I want something that I can mod up a slight bit (just for the experiance and the performance) but not feel like Im throwing away the money because of the high mileage. And most of all, I just want a solid vehicle. I dont want to be driving it for 6 months and have it start having problems and be scrapped in a year's time. Now I KNOW I can get that for 3K its just takes a bit of time

If you guys any suggestions on a particular car model out there, lemme know. Im definatly am leaning towards the 95-99 Eclipse (favorite of the eclipse models) or a 2002-2003 Lancer (I like the grille and head lights better then the 04-07s). Of course there are plenty of other great cars out there, but some suggestions would be GREAT. Just keep in mind im not looking for an UBER high perfomance machine. Just something to have a bit of fun with while being a good DD.

As of right now though, My Explorer is being test driven so I can get an approximate GPA and from there Im going to make the final decision on weather to actually go through with this whole thing. Repaying back into the college fun monthly is going to take a toll on my paycheck.
Anywho, thanks for the great responses and wish me luck. Hopefully soon I will be in a new-ish car!

Im 22 right now... currently i own an Evo X, an 07 R1, and a 07 Ninja... i rent part of a townhome, i have a g/f, and my insurance is somewhat reasonable.... I just recently graduated college and am in debt of roughly 70k...

I had 2 hand me down cars until i bought my first real car. 06 vw GTI i was 19 at the time. I had excess loans from school that i used to help put a down payment on the GTI. Ever since then i got into a frenzy of buying toys (evo, and motorcycles) I had an ok paying valet job (roughly $14/hour after tips)...but it was killing me!

now i work as a blackjack dealer and im well of in a sense that i dont have to worry about payments on my car and motorcycles and insurance (which equals to more than what 8.75 full time makes a month untaxed)

What i am trying to say is, dont fall into the trap i fell into. I know I SHOULD have kept my 99 mercury cougar, instead i bought a brand new GTI and everything else is written in stone that weighs roughly 70k!

Take what you have now, buy something you can pay cash and just keep your job and go from there. if you can get a used lancer for cheap, take it...with this economy no job is safe, especially a temp job. Good luck and keep us posted man. Hopefully this kinda helped
Yes actually it did. Although I would LOVE to own just about ANY lancer right now, Debt is something im not ready to tackle. Besides, waiting these next few years would make the Evo even more of a joy once I get it.

Again thanks to all for helping me out and being so courteous. I have been to a few car forums (including my own state's!) and they all are just complete jackasses. So its both a breath of fresh air and a blessing to find such a helpfull and great forum!

Guy, from reading your posts it really sounds to me like you need a Honda Civic. Don't let the name scare you, it's usually not the cars that collect a bad reputation, but the owners who modify them in unusual ways and who drive irresponsibly.

You can pick up a used high mileage Civic for pretty cheap, they can easily last a very long time, and they are very easy to modify with a huge amount of cheap aftermarket parts available. With a few changes to the exterior (springs, wheels) you can have a reasonably nice looking car.

Eclipse's are fun cars but from personal experience, you will fix one problem just to find out there is something else wrong with the car. They are not very reliable.

This is what I concluded from your above post, hope you take it into consideration!

P.S. Evo4Emperor gave some great advice But seriously, don't get into a 60 month financing aggreement on a car you will probably grow out of in a few years (09 Lancers).

Hello,

With your budget you may be able to pick up a good car with a minor problem that owner for financial reasons cant afford to fix. To be honest had I not bought a Lancer OZ few months ago to have something to fix up on Id buy the Subaru WRX (I know wrong car to talk about on a Evo forum lol) in link below because if only needing a clutch its a very good deal, I think, surely there are similar cars in your area as well. Also can find many cars already with body kits and etc for cheaper than could do it yourself for.

Hello,

Why not just find something like a 93+ Honda hatch, can often see them on Ebay and Craigslist already fixed up a bit and at cheap prices, to me they dont look bad at all , especially in bright colors.
