Dont know what to do..car engine overheated..no coolant?

was driving home tonight from friends and the heat gauage was fluctuating up and down, didnt think anything of it,because last year during the summer it did,but this time it got higher and higher and higher,i didnt stop(Shouldve) but it got close to the top when i was 3 minutes down road from home. i get home and looked like steam or something coming out of engine. checked coolant, very very low. put coolant in it,and roomie said to start it,i did 2 hours later but i was too afraid to let it run enough to find out how hot it got. he seemed to think it jst needed coolant and thats all,but sounds like leak o something somewhere. i dont know to call aaa and have it towed or what. or try to drive it shop or what..

If you're leaking coolant somewhere then you should be able to see it. Fill up your radiator to the top and fill up the coolant overflow container according to the marks. Driving around will aid in the releasing of air bubbles in your coolant system. After your engine has cooled down for a few hours, check your coolant overflow container to see if any coolant is in there. If it's empty, put some in there. When your engine is cool and you see coolant in the overflow you should be good.
