gas grade

a general question.

I was driving around tonight and the air is nice and cool in Orlando but I noticed that with 93 octane in my car backfired a lot less than usual with the 87. I am nuts or is this something that could truly be affected by the type of gas? Or is it the denser air?

It does have more octane so when it burns in the engine it might possibly be creating more power. Could be a combo of the cooler air too. Just my 2 cents.

well i know some people with Evo's...there car backfires....i remember one story a fathers kid said something like "ooh fire!" and the dad was all like 'whoa!' lol

if ur running a rather straight through exhaust and running a little rich in the fuel stage...i guess u could backfire....all that excess fuel poppin out ur exhaust and the exhaust gasses compressed than released may somehow 'pop'....not sure how this happens or why...try that one website like www.howstuffworks.com and look it up..maybe jeeves knows... www.askjeeves.com he'll tell ya lol

I'm running with 93 octane in mine. The engine does run a thousand times smoother. I also get gas mileage that is an average of 4-8 mpg better than I was getting with 87. No backfiring though. I originally just bought the 93 to see why everyone bought premium... after the better gas milage and more power, I'm hooked.

Most people buy premium because they have to. Higher compression engines need a higher octane fuel to prevent predetonation, which would cause engine knocking.

My Civic (when I had it) used to backfire all the time with my wide-open exhaust. When I put a more restrictive (but still high-flow) system on the backfire disappeared. From what I know cars backfire all the time, it's just with a wide open exhaust you can actually hear it.

I have headers and a performance muffler and I noticed that I could hear a back firing noise coming from either the cat or the stock resonator when I did just as Recon explained. First high rev acceleration and then during slow down I could hear the backfiring in the exhaust. It's not a loud bang outside the car, it's what I can hear at the cat/resonator beneath me.

I've always wanted to try premium because everybody talks about it. Is there anything special I need to do before putting 93 in? Or just fill her right up?

Just wondering

93 octane is the one in the middle or is it super? Cause at my gas station theres regular plus and super. Also is there a difference in the quality of gas? Like for example around here we have Shell, 7-11, Delta, Getty, Exxon, and BP do they have different gas or is it all the same crap?

super would be ur 93...look for a yellow sticker that says like 87, 89, 91, 93 or whatever....gas stations all have different types.

im sure there may be SLIGHT variations in the gas, some people get better mileage with diff companies...i just use Phillips 66 cuz its 2 mins from my house, unless i want a carwash i goto the CFM... than for free or $2 i can get a deluxe car wash, haha

I don't know if it makes a difference with the car itself because when you open the gas tank it says "USE UNLEADED REGULAR ONLY" if I am not mistaken. I'll double check it again.

There has to be some kind of reason behind that.

That really means "Don't Put Diesel, Regular Leaded, or White Gas in this hole you moron!"

With the compression, timing, and fuel delivery of the stock motor you really don't need the high octane. Once you go turbo or mess with the timing at all then you need a higher octane to prevent knocking.
