grinding noise when driving 03 lancer es

Lately I've been getting a grinding noise coming from the front drivers side wheel well area. The car also pulls to the right pretty hard while driving straight. The sound is only while driving, when I hit the brakes the sound stops and also while turning right but not left. I pulled on the drivers side wheel and could hear the sound but I couldn't tell if the wheel was moving or felt loose. Input appreciated

Probably a wheels bearing, possibly cv joint, or an outside chance it could be a stuck caliper with the pad worn down to the metal. Either way its something that needs fixed ASAP.

Well my spring came uncoiled in the process of fixing it so I ended up having to get a tow at 3 am. What a pain. Mechanic will do the rest.... ughh

The spring on the strut. It came uncoiled so I couldn't reconnect the hub assembly to the strut

Did you remove the hub assembly from the front lower control arm? I don't know why this would be an issue, I took my hubs off of the car with the struts and springs still on the car and got both bearings replaced and it was easy...

The spring came uncoiled when I disconnected the strut from the hub assembly.

Wow! You should double check your suspension. I don't understand how that happened. There may be another issue. Did you hit a few potholes?

I live in Nebraska and during the winters the roads get pretty bad so I can imagine I probably have hit a few bad bumps lol. So should I invest in new springs maybe? Or struts and springs? I just need to fix my wheel bearing. I'm hoping that I didn't damage the CV joint when the spring came uncoiled and landed on it.

Why didn't you pull the axle before trying to remove the strut from the hub? The axle, tie rod end, and lower ball joint "need" to be disconnected first to avoid the problems you stated above...

If you're taking the strut out did you take the 3 14mm nuts off from under the hood or just the one in the center? The whole shock/spring assembly should come off in one piece unless you took that center nut off and shot the strut into the axle.

He shouldn't be able to get that center nut off without an impact. I doubt that's what he did.

In order to replace the wheel bearing you have to remove the entire spindle/hub and take it to a shop to have the bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in. So I don't see why he would leave the CV Joint (AKA an Axle) in the car...

and btw I don't even think it is a wheel bearing it sounds like a problem with the brakes to me.
