could make a fun little track car, but I wouldn't bother making it road legal...and the price is steep for the damage...you pay money to fix it, if you ever want to sell it, the collision is likely reported, and not many people would pay what you'd want for it after they see the "carfax" or other used vehicle reports.
it could be worth a part-out, if they were willing to let it go for less...offer not much more than what you could fetch on an engine and tranny together( I don't know what late model lancer parts go for)...otherwise I'd walk away, at $4k not worth it to fix and drive, and not worth it to part out. if you could get it for a decent price it would be a worthy donor car, if you could find another with a clean body and a blown engine...or just part it out and use the money to buy a car that is already road worthy. again, not for $4k unless an engine and tranny is worth $3k, which I'm pretty sure is not.
