You got your answers. It's not a science. People are literally paid to determine what sounds good, and if they give it meaning, even better. I read a whole article on the Camaro and here's Chevy's logic behind naming their most pupular sports car:
CAMARO means friend
Z is the last letter of the alphabet
28 is 14 times 2

But hey, it sounds good and sold cars for over 20 years. They just need something to differentiate the different models, and every manufacturer is free to use them as they please. There's no industry standard, but most of them agree that, logically, L is for luxury, E is for economy, and GT is a racing term (or R or S lately).

SI dates back to the Civics of 84-87 which were carb'd. The special ones with fuel injection were called SI = Sports Injection. The name stuck ever since.

Honda's names are weird though. The EX is better than LX version, so the E doesn't stand for economy there. Also, the bottom of the line DX supposedly means "Deluxe". Hmm, nothing too deluxe about roll up windows and paltry engines. HX's and VX's are gas-savers, but who knows what the letters mean.

Actually if you get a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder 16 valve engine it gets to be pretty quick the top speed maybe about 125 I actually know this I do own a 2000 Mitsubishi galant es and it has the 2.4 liter in it and I can burn off tires despite being front wheel drive my ego is actually needing an engine so I'm trying to find the rear wheel drive edition of the 2.4 liter for it mine is evo 3 btw but anyways es can be quite different depending on the engine my car 2.4 get about 25-34 mpg but I can still get it well over 100 mph in a mile or more I have got it past 120 mph but not many people have 4 speed chips in their car haha
