Proton is actually a car company. Mitsu gave license to Proton and CMC to use their engine design. Heck. If Mitsu doesn't want to compete in a market, license it and get money off royalty and such or whatever. The smart way to make money . . . like cosworth europe to Ford.

Here's the company's home site. They sell cars to pacific rim countries and Aussie and NZ.

thanks for the tech info, you know your stuff.

However, Proton is the national car maker for Malaysia and has (some say unfair) protection from the state via tariffs levied against "foreign" auto makers. This is why they outsell everyone there. Proton also sells cars in the U.K.
Speaking of Proton, they also own Lotus and have used them to design their own engines making them less dependent on

Also, CMC has designed their own engine. There is a 2.0l DOHC VVT version of it powering the Taiwan market version of the Charoit Grandis (known as the Savrin) yet?
I'll shut up then

Yup, I knew Proton is a Malaysian car company. As for importing to the UK, was it a recent thing like in '00?

Yup, lotus did tune the chassis for the Satria GTI. The British company was originally bought by GM. Red ink. Ford stepped in. Red ink. Sold to Bugatti (sp). Bankrupted the company. Now, Proton has it. Seems like Lotus can't keep their budget straight.

Unfortuantely, I don't know too much of CMC. I only knew the existance of the company 8 months ago. Then again, I always heard their salvage is very cheap compared to ones in Aussie or NZ . . . Dollar value is still strong in HK, if I'm right.

Here ya go, these are pics of their OZ Rally equivalent:

http://www.5230.com.tw/carfla/virage/virage_3.html

The car has a DOHC 4G93 (1.8l 16Valve) engine that makes 140PS at 6500rpm, max torque comes at 5000rpm...
the new "Virage io" in taiwan is even nicer

it has the EASS (electronic adjustable suspension system)... allows the driver to set the suspension to hard, medium or soft.

this plus loads of other stuff. *envy*

Proton has imported into the U.K for about 4 to 5 years now...
CMC has been around for a long time and has sold in Taiwan for over 20 years.
Cars are considered a status symbol for most Asians. So, even what we call economy cars, are decked out in leather with (fake) wood trim, parking assist systems, navi systems and so on.
Culture is a funny thing
