2002 OZ vs. 2003 SVT Focus ???

My boss drives the SVT Focus and loves to race. So, we took our cars out to run'em and he could only stay about 1/2 a car's length in front of me without being able to pull away.

The thing that gets me is that his car is 170hp stock and ours is 120. His car does not have any mods to it and mine only has an axleback 5Zigen exhaust I think.

I traded my Mazda 2003 Protege 5 in for it to try and get my monthly payments down. However, I didn't realize until after I had done the deal that the Lancer had about 10 hp less than my Protege5. I was a little disappointed at first, but soon realized that my OZ was faster then the Mazda. It seems like something else was done to the car, but I don't know what and I can't contact the past owner.

Any theories?????

my personal opionion is that fords drivetrain eats up a lot of power. Every ford I have ever driven I end up disapointed with its power because the hp is usually good but it feels like the power to the wheels isn't much at all. Just an observation most of my family drives fords and i give them crap for it all the time.

You're forgetting what wins races: torque. Sure, the SVT Focus has 170 hp, but if I recall it still only has 130 torque (same as the Lancer). Bare numbers stock for stock, the Focus should pull on the Lancer right at the last second, but as said above, there's drivetrain loss and possibly a weight issue? I drove a Focus before chosing the Lancer. It was a no brainer.

i agree with this post i have a friend that has a few bolt ons done to his svt focus and i have alot more done than him but we play around all the time and he gets so pissy cause he spent more for the svt than we do for our oz's and our cars are bigger heaver and i still walk all over him and it doesnt stop there i aslo can play with si civics and last week i raced a integra gsr and he had about the same bolt on's that i did and it was a close race but he just didnt have the torque to keep up in the gears and i was shifting way before he did he just couldnt keep up now my oz is heavly modded with everything but NOS or a turbo

Yeah, its all about torque. I took a 97 accord se ( i believe its 130hp or 145hp and about the same torque 2.2 liter) and took him by 1 1/2 - 2 car lengths, strange cuz i really thought i was gonna lose. Also took a crx with exhause and intake, and won by 3 cars lengths. I really thought that slimmer pocket rocket was gonna take me. Also civics?.... haha, no joke... that 114 lbs of torque aint ****, my ***** has more torque.

At the time, all i had was an axelback exhaust.

Thanks guys for the replies. I just now installed my AEM CAI. It's sweet. I love the sound between 3000-5000 rpm and it's not a whole lot of extra power, but every little bit helps.

When you raced your boss it could have also been the way he shifted gears too. If you were close to red lining it then you had more of advantage that he would if he didn't.
