Mitsubishi CEO confirms US Lancer Evolution
First of all the Ae86 corolla never made it here, and it wasnt a very fast car, but it was one of the best drift cars ever built. And with the GTO, I was wrong my friend informed me that it came over in a very slim pickens known as the 3000GT VR4
And secondly a stick is really easy to drive, do you have any friends that have an old crappy car to practice on though? One day of driving a stick and you will know how to do it, then after that you learn how to do it well.

What do you mean? Would you like a comfortable car?
The Autospeed test is a little bit biased. While what they say is true, they look at this car from a Mercedes / BMW testing journalist viewpoint:
- here is obviously no leather, sunroof, heatable seats, climate control etc.
- the dampers may be hard compared to a Lincoln, but what kind of reference is that?
- the handbrake needs adjusting when the car is new
They also overstate the performance. They make it sound like a rocketship. Again, because they look at it from a Mercedes viewpoint.

I am very excited to hear this news. Hopefully the STi will come as well now. I'm not sure which one I would get at this point =) (Turbo mag recently called the WRX "the next Civic"--yechhhh. )
I do know the sports car and performance market is going to get really interesting.
Anyway I am really concerned about all the equipment making it to the US version, especially the Brembos. Most Americans are far more concerned with HP than braking, and given the value of the Brembos it would be an effective cost cutting measure. If this car hits $30k+ it is not going to sell as well as it should. Yes, for the hardcore it is a value, but the car is an economy car at heart with lots of go-fast goodies, and ultimately the build quality isn't going to be there. Certainly not on par with say BMW, or even the 350Z. I hear even the Subaru outclasses it in terms of materials and fit and finish.
But the Brembos would seal the deal for me.

Boys, you're getting the car completely the wrong way, it's not "an economy car at heart with lots of go-fast goodies." In fact the Evo's have near to nothing in common with the standard Lancer, or Cedia as it's called in Japan now, except for a few body parts. The Evos should be their own car make, they're so different.
And Claudius, from the standpoint of normal cars (M3, AMG, etc.) the Evo IS a rocketship. And again, if anyone is looking for something like an M3 for less money, I advise you not to bother, cause the car will be too hardcore for you.

Michaelk-
I understand the chassis is significantly different from the base Lancer, but of course there must be similarities. I assume they use the same frame, suspension mounting points, some body and interior panels, etc. I'm talking about overall fit and finish--I don't think it's going to be on par with other $30k cars on the market now. However, the performance should far exceed those aforementioned $30k cars, so one has to be willing to accept the tradeoff.
In any event, I can't say from personal knowledge, as I've never had the opportunity to see an Evo. But it seems to be the journalistic consensus from what I've read. Personally, having owned both Mitsu and Subies in the past, the Mitsu Eclipse was a POS, and I hope Mitsu has improved their quality control by this point, whereas I would buy anothe Subaru ina heartbeat. As far as STi vs. Evo--we'll have to see. I need to drive them both first.

"I assume they use the same frame, suspension mounting points,", sorry, they are all different. I think the only same things are the rear doors and the interior in parts, maybe some standard parts like the power fluid reservoir, etc. but all the main things (engine, whole suspension, frame, mounting points, transmission, diffs, clutch, etc.) have nothing, and I repeat nothing, to do with the standard Lancer. The finish isn't as nice as a German car, that is right, but if anyone looks for the same qualities as a German built car, don't buy an Evo, honestly. The Evo is for people that want an all out, hardcore and really fast car that can be raced or tuned further than 99.9% of all other cars. Although the 7 is already a little more compliant than the previous models as it's not a rally homologation-special anymore.

I'm glad to hear someone in Germany who feels that the Lancer can outperform most of the German performance cars---that is, if I reading you correctly. That's an impressive statement.
How would you compare your Evo to, say, an M3? (If you've driven one) In all aspects?
If ur buying an evo for a nice fancy type car then ur buying the wrong car, The evo doesnt need sunroofs, fancy seats and a bunch of other heavy uselesss crap. If u want all that stuff go buy another car..
