Painting Aftermarket Wheels?
Today my car got really muddy from constrution next to the road ann it was raining and I noticed when I got to work that my wheels would look awesome if they were painted or (powdercoated) bronze. My car is black and when my wheels were dirty they almost looked better than when clean and silver. I know powdercoating would be best but, would it be possible to paint them myself? How much would powdercoating cost? I know walmart and autozone have wheel paint in a spray can but I would like a second opinion before I trust the sake of my wheels to a $5 can of spray paint. Go to my car domain page if you want to see the wheels while they are still silver.

Nice Ride man, I love the Wheels.
However as far as Ive heard, getting your rims powder coated is expensive.
Dont be discouraged, it can be done sure, but its expensive is all haha.
DO NOT attempt to paint your rims. Period.
Powdercoating is not another method of painting. Its powder. Really.
Just trying to save ya the hardships, but I like 'em in silver and bronze would work well on black too.
If you really wanna do the color change, then Id say just sell those and get rims in the color you want, or Save and get rims in the color you want...
Keep us posted, good luck

Even though most people say NOT to paint your rims your-self... I'm gonna do it anyway. It's too late to back out now anyway as I already started to sand the hell out of my rims. Now my question is, and probably is the same question everybody want to ask... What paint should I be using.
I'll have my rims down to bare metal, so I'll have to use a good sealer, primer, paint, clear.
Now what brand would you suggest. I want to stear away from rattle can. I have a cheap paint gun. Even though it's a cheap one, I'm 100% sure it will give better results than a rattle can. So what kind/type of stuff should I use.
Oh... and I can't decide on a color either

I just resprayed one of my scraped up silver Roja Formula 7's with the same silver Dup paint available in Walmart/Pepboys/AutoZone/etc. Very easy; just took out the center cap and went at it...
Since I'm going all out sanding it down to bare metal... I would like the paint to stay on the rim for more than a day. Don't forget I'm not doing a simple touch up. I'm repainting the whole thing times 4. I want something that will last, something that will be worth my effort. Geez, I already spent 4 hours sanding down 1 wheel and it isn't finished yet.
everyone says powdercoat for a reason and thats because it looks great and does last for more then a day. Its really not that hard to powder coat... Its basically, sand the wheel down. spray it, then bake it in oven. done. somewhere in there is clear as well. its really not that expensive considering it is more to just buy wheels...
Im out 2 cents.

If youre going to do oaint you will need a rim paint, check autozone, pepboys, anything like that. If youre doing all that prep work already it might not be THAT expensive to have them poweder coated, try looking into it.

I might look into powder coating. I'll see what's available around my place.
Word to the wise... forget about sand paper
I started using Paint Remover yesterday and I did as much in 45 minutes with paint remover than I did with sand paper for over 3 hours. My first wheel is almost done. I think all 4 wheels should be ready for paint or powder coat in about a week and a half.

BTW... with Paint Remover it's easy as hell. Apply a thick coat of paint remover, let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then brush the wheel with steel whool. I used an S.O.S pad. As you can see, there isn't much paint left to remove. The biggest part now, on that wheel, is the inside which should be really easy since it's a flat surface.
i painted my stock oz's black with paint from autozone. Sanded first, then painted came out great. not only do i not have to worry about brake dust anymore, but it also doesnt stain from the dirt like normal rattle can paint does. Whoever says dont paint ur own rims...i suggest try it. i love the outcome on my rims and it was a hell of a lot cheaper than powder coating or buy new rims.

hey blaze_125, what color you planning on painting your wheels? I decided not to paint mine because my wheels have those fake rivets/screws around the rim and it would take forever to sand around those, well now that I think about it I could just leave the lip silver and paint the spokes. I dont know yet. Hey let me know how it turns out and how far you have gotten on them so far.
