Request : belt changes
Request : belt changes
i have about 58k miles on my lancer and i think it's time for a belt change, however i would love to learn how to .. knowledge is power and i just want to know my car .. ive tried to look for repair manuals for our car but i cannot find one so if anyone has a how to (i know its a big job) or if theres anyone in vegas that wants to help me out hit me up !
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
**I was told not to must with the timing belt, so I will help with the other two belts.
**Make sure the pulleys do not move, this can be done by taking your time. If you are worry about it moving, you can simply mark a spot on the pulley and an area next to it to make sure the 2 marks are always lining up.
Before you start, make sure you can get under your car.
Power Steering/Air Conditioning Belt will be done first, then the Alternator belt.
1. Located the pulley nearest to the top. You will see a smaller one under it. You need to loosen that the smaller pulley. It will be a 14mm bolt.
2. Once you get the smaller pulley loosen, go back to the big pulley nearest the top. Under there you will find a tension bolt. You will need to loosen that too. It will be 14mm also. If you can not find it, try to find a 14mm bolt under the pulley. There is only one 14mm. Once you start to get that loose, you will see the belt giving.
3. Now with the Power Steering/Air Conditioning Belt loosen, it’s time to get under the car. Before you go under the car locate the alternator. Once you know where it is, go under the car, and locate the alternator again. You will see that it is held on by one bolt. Again this is a 14mm bolt, and again it must be loosened.
4. Once that is done, go to the passenger side of the car, and stand right next to the wheel. When you’re in front of the wheel look down, you see a bracket with two bolts. One will be pointing straight with the car, while the other one will be point straight if you if you are facing your car. Loosen the bolt pointing straight with the car. Once loosen, loosen the other bolt. Both bolts are 12mm.
5. Once loosen you will notice the belt give. Now it is as simple as taking the belts off and replacing them. Remember, the Alternator belt will go on first then the Power Steering/Air Conditioning Belt.
6. The car should have an image of how the belts should look, in case you forget.
7. Just repeat these steps backwards to tighten everything.
8. Once done, take it for a ride, if you hear any howling or squealing, the belts are to tight. Simply follow the steps again and loosen them a little.
**Please feel free to add anything else needed. I am not a mechanic, if you are unsure, please do not attempt it.

is that 14mm bolt literally under the pulley or is it behind the pulley?I see one that is behind the pulley, between the slots in it, is that the one I am looking for?
so I go through on of the holes in the top pulley and losen the bolt behind it....

i guess it possible to say that anyone who has installed the RRM pulley on their car knows pretty well how to replace the belts on their car...i know i do
belts shouldnt run ya more than 20-30 bux at auto zone or advance auto, thats not including the timing belt tho....that can be a little more pricey. not sure of exact price

it's easy, i think you were looking for "serpentine" belt. i forget on the crank whether it goes towards the wheel or towards the block though... you ought to just do the alternator belt and the power steering/A.C. all at the same time, it won't run more than like $30.
he has it pretty much spot on, it's really easier than it sounds. you may need to jack up the car to get enough clearance to mess with the belts on the crank without taking off the wheel and splash guards. i found it was easier to just put the car up on jackstands for a few mins than to bother with the wheel and splash guards.
you also may not run into any of those problems because i am not able to get under my car due to what the ride height is set to on my coilovers.
