You will see much better throttle response (rev quicker) and increased gas mileage.

this may be my next mod, so for someone with basic mechanical knowledge and your basic $50 tool set, will the install go smoothly you think?

The breaker bar and 6 point impact socket will be your friend. I haved not done it on the lancer I have done it on other vehicles. If the bolt is threaded in standard and the pulley rotates clockwise you should be able to brace the breaker bar against the ground, turn the car over once or twice and that should get it loose with no issues.
I would recomend pinching the fuel line or pulling the plugs so the engine does not start or you will have a whole mess of problems.
Impact wrench will get the job done too if you have one available, and you can get to the bolt.

You pretty much need an impact wrench if you have an automatic tranny. There is no way to keep the crank from turning when you just use a breaker bar.

dont really, do you?
i was able to hold the belt to stop the pulley from spinning while it was tightened with a torque wrench to the appropriate tension...
