So I was coming home from PSU Altoona and there was some ice and i was going slow, i started to brake a little from fish tailing and it felt really 'rocky' also the first couple times i broke my brakes squeaked a little, but then it stopped.
this is my first time driving in the snow/ice, likewise with the lancer.
should i get anything checked out? Is it all normal?
Also, what are the 2 and 1 gears used for in the Lancer CVT?
Thanks.

Well im not expert in cars, but since i live in toronto, I have enough winter driving experience i think..
First thing is first, the basics of winter driving is, you go very very slow on turns, and you brake early, signal early. When you brake, make sure you ALWAYS brake in a straight line- NEVER EVER brake during a turn, if you brake during a turn you are braking too late, and you lose the most traction to the ground when braking or turning. You combine both you are going to fish tail for sure. So always brake well before you turn in snow/ice.
Also I wont go into the physics of it, but if youve taken it, you should know that you get more grip on the road when you accelerate than when you brake. With that being said, Always try to slow down, and accelerate WHILE in the turn. All winter driving courses teach you that, when you lose control, you never jam your brakes and countersteer, thats just going to make it worse.
anyways that "rocky" feeling you feel when you brake is your ABS kicking in. Your car is braking in the most efficient way for you, so your brakes dont lock out and cause further skid. So its normal for it to feel rocky when you break during bad road conditions. But whenever you feel your ABS kicking in, you should keep a mental note that you are probably driving too fast for the current road conditions, cuz if there was an accident and you needed to slow down at that moment, you most likely wouldnt have been able to stop in time.
I havent seen the CVT because my car is manual, but basically I think the 2 and 1 gears on cvt (im assuming you are refering to like D1 D2 etc on normal cars) Its for going up and down hills, and i guess for winter driving too. Basically it keeps your car within gear 1, or within gear 1-2, so you get more torque when going up hills or when you are towing stuff, or so your car doesnt go down hills too fast (so you dont have to constantly brake going down a hill in the summer). For winter driving, you would use D1 to get out of a snow ditch if youve dug yourself into one.
anyways correct me if im wrong =P

Ah, well thank you very much. I was wrong there are no Numbered gears with the CVT...i think. Mine has L and I assume that is the same thing. Should I use L to get around in the snow?
L would be a good idea. Also, drive slow.
What's weird is that my CVT doesn't have an L. P, R, N, D, and the "manual" are the only options on the shifter tree...
As for the ABS, you get used to it. Just practice while driving slowly/safely and it'll become 2nd nature. I felt the ABS about 5 times on the way to work today.

He's got an ES. It's not Sportronic and they don't have the gate to +/- through the gears like the GTS. I attached a pic showing P,R,N,D,L. It was on About.com Cars.
...and oh yeah, you can use L to get around in the messy stuff, but you only really need it for the slop and at low speeds.
The ES does have a CVT, just not a Sportronic one with paddle/manual shifting. OK, I think that's everything I wanted to say... :P
