From what I know is that Cali has very strict emissions standards, and that the car is more restrictive in order to comply. Happens with most vehicles sold there actually...and if you intend to comply, you'll want to leave it as such.

Good luck!

Get the RRM header when it comes available it will remove the precat, and will essentially make your car a fed spec(unless the tune is different as well)

thanks for both the comments and i do know that in the first three years of owning a new car it doesnt have to be smoged and im also going to be moving out of state so that compliance wont be a problem i am waiting for a fujita short ram to show up anytime now which will help on the intake side and i have been told that injen is in process with a header back exhaust but i really want to find out what the differences are if anyone else knows more it would help!
thanks

Not exactly. You can't really change your car from a CA spec to a Fed spec just like that. Yeah, the RRM header for the fed specs will work on CA specs, but you have to do some modifications to the exhaust and such. Just wait it out until the CA spec header comes out and it should be pushing just about the same as the FED spec header. Although, I have heard that removing the exhaust and running a straight pipe from the header can work to, but I'm not to sure on how well that would work.

You cannot change your car to Fed spec. It's not just like they slapped on a part and called it PZEV.

Just enjoy what you have.

Thats essentially what I said about the header, although I guess I should have said wait until the CA spec header from RRM. Did Mitsu thow some other crap to lower horsepower other than a precat down the exhuast on a PZEV, or did they play with the tuning too? IDK because I have Fed spec, but all I have seen on a PZEV is an added precat, hence the lower HP rating, but if there are other changes......

I believe one of the requirements to achieve a PZEV rating was to have a completely "loss-less" fuel system. In other words, none of the fuel vapors enter the environment once you put the gas cap on.

As far as why there's less HP in the PZEV cars, I'm not sure, but I do know (through reading these forums) that the PZEV cars have 2 cats. So, a custom exhaust utilizing hi-flow pre-cats and cats ought to be do-able for anyone that wants to gain power and maintain smog compliance.

It's tuning also. There's an extra O2 sensor on the PZEV versions, so you know that means the ECU is different.
