How To: Installing & Mounting Tweeters In The Door

Hey all, this is going to be my first How To, I am installing tweeters in my 02 Lancer, in the door. I was looking around the site and saw a bunch of different ideas, and this is the one I liked the best. They make a pretty big difference, bring alot more of the highs right in your face! I am running 2 12's in the trunk so my treble definitely needed some help, it was getting way to drowned out!
So here we go, if you have any questions feel free to ask along the way, very simple tho.
Tweeters - Polk db1001 1" Dome Tweeters W/ Built in crossovers. (Bought from another member for 5 bucks! )
Tools I Used -
Screwdrivers (Phillips & Flat Head)
Power Drill (With an Adjustable Circle Hole Saw Cutter Drill Bit * $5-10 @ Home depot)
Dremel
Wire Cutters
Soldering Gun & Solder

1) Start by removing the door panels -
While the door is ajar, look for all the plastic caps surrounding the panel.
Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pop them open, then a Philips to remove them.
Using flat-head screwdriver, pop open the little square panel in the middle of the lock/unlock door handle area.
Then there's one in the small door pocket handle thing at the bottom.
Pop up the small square panel, the that should be the last screw.
Then just pull on the door panel firmly, and the plastic plugs will pop out all around the door.

Panel Is Off!

2) Next before I did any drilling into my door panels, I wired up the tweeters and made sure they were working properly. I just "T'ed" right into the stock wiring for the speaker in the door. My first attempt i cut the wire right in half (Didn't know my own strength i guess...) so i soldered it back together with the tweeter wires, no biggy. but beware, the stock wiring is very thin! ... Good! after you have made sure that they are working (if you can hear small crackling in the tweeters when you crank the volume, switch the polarity of the wires! That shouldn't be there!

3) Drilling your door! Now this is the fun part! I used an Adjustable Circle Hole Saw cutter drill bit for this part, i measured the mount and then set the cutter just a bit smaller then i needed. Starting out small and working your way to fit is alot better then going to big! Love My dremel! Best Friend in this project! I placed the tweeter mount up against the door frame, and used a small screw driver to stick through the center and mark my center starting spot, then went to town. After I had the hole through i sat down with the mount and the dremel and just started to make my hole bigger to fit in the tweeter. Measure where the first hole was put in the first door, and repeat on the second panel.

Started Out Small, so i could get the cutter in the right place cuz the bit was slipping and moving the starting hole to much.

Easy Peasy.

Dremeled out and ready for mount!

Now its lookin better!

4) Once the mount was in I used spray on glue, and duct tape to secure the back so they don't fall into the door(not the best way to secure, but its holding up great for now!). Then pushed the wire through and secured the tweeter inside the mount, used a few zip-ties to keep the wires all together, and reinstalled the door panels! The biggest pain of the project! BTW I was able to get them back on by putting them in at an angle, and placing the side closest to the mirror on the window track first, then pressing the rest of the track in place, and popping the rest of the panel after that. Good Job! Now Enjoy!

My Baby!

I still plan on cleaning up the outside look a bit, there is a .99 cent store that sells Black Silicone Sealant right by my house, applying a small amount to the outside will seal it tight, and after you smooth it out, will look like they were meant to be there! Ill update with more pics once I do this. Not top priority but ill get it done soon.

Thanks Man, it was a fun one. If anybody else has any pictures of their installs, or pictures of their tweeters, throw them up to give people a few more mounting ideas.

Or any suggestions or thing you did different while installing yours would be helpful too!
