how to paint grille
so pretty much i would like to get rid of the chrome on my '02 lancer grille. does anyone know the right way to do this? steps,tips, info...all is appreciated thanks!! =D

i did it to mine, take a look at my photos, you can paint it whatever color you want really. you a good primer before you apply paint. also make sure to score the chrome very deeply to get the primer and paint to stick to it. i think i used like 50 grit, and my grille hasn't chipped at all.

as jdparadee said, you want to scuff the chrome to promote adhesion, but 50 grit is way overkill. 200 would do just fine and not leave any visible scratching. All you want is to get rid of any 'shine' on the chrome, then lay down some primer, then your choice of paint. Take the grill off the car too, just to avoid getting any over-spray on the car.

Ok, heres the thing, I painted mine and it took probably 6 months to chip off. I scoured the crap out of the chrome but its still chipping like crazy. On top of that, the chrome is peeling away. I found something a long time ago on how to do this the proper way, and that involved peeling all of the chrome plating off of the plastic grille. You have to spend a lot of time scuffing up the chrome to get it to where it would be appropriately paintable. I used to be part owner of a body and paint shop and we never had success with painting chrome anything (unless it wasnt real metal chrome). BTW, when I prepped my chrome grille, I bead blasted the crap out of it and my paint still didnt stick. Yes I primed and cleared.
Same here I spent over 3 hours sanding and ruffing up every mm of that thing and primed and cleared with still no luck 
I actually think I am going to buy an aftermarket hood anyways so it wont matter

man..is there anyway of knowing when the chrome is paintable?
