Changing Rotors
Changing Rotors
I'm planning to replace rotors/pads this weekend on my 2003 Lancer ES, and will follow this guide, please correct if anything wrong.
I already painted some Duralast rotors with Duralast Gold pads (organic).
I'm under the assumption that the rotors are not bolted to the hub or anything like that.
1. Take off wheels front wheels.
2. Take off front calipers.
3. Take off rotors by screwing in two bolts in the rotors to push them out.
4. Replace rotors.
5. Push back calipers with a tool (open up the brake fluid cap - do not take any fluid out).
6. Replace pads with some lube on the back.
7. Replace wheels.
8. Brake a couple times really hard with various speeds.
Anything I'm missing or any extra steps I should take?

Is number 3 necessary? I think the rotors can be pulled right off after the brakes are taken off.
Great suggestion taking the brake fluid cap off. I had a hell of a time pushing my calipers back in so that my new pads would fit, and it sounds like taking the cap off the fluid could help.

"If a brake pad set produces an excessive amount of smell or smoke on the initial bedding procedure, chances are that there is something wrong with the pad and how it was manufactured. "
Mine produced some smoking, but not an excessive amounts. I stopped a couple of times from 40mph to 5mph, and then 30mph and then 20mph. I also put some graphite anti-seize on the new rotors, maybe that is what is smoking, but it is high heat (800C). I'll test it again today.
