'Project Car' - Where do I start?
'Project Car' - Where do I start?
Admittedly, I'm a 20 year old looking to fix up a car my cousin gave me. I know next to nothing about cars - but I'm willing to learn. I figured the best place to learn would be a forum dedicated to lancers!
The car has seen better days, but I plan to put in the time and effort to get her back to new.
There are switches and wires hanging that I'm not completely sure what they belong to.
The odometer says it has only 13,599 miles on it, which I'm not sure whether to believe or not. I believe the front bumper might be a goner, and I have no idea what it's supposed to look like under the hood, or what's missing on the inside.
Battery will be the first thing replaced since it won't hold a charge.
I know I will need new wheels and tires for it. It's currently rocking an 18" rim with 205/40/17 tires on it.
I'm mainly worried about performance at the moment. The paint/aesthetics are going to definitely be the last things on my list of mods. I just want to get this baby running/driving fine before worrying about what it looks like on the outside.
Below is a link to the album where all the pictures I took of it today are:

Thank you for looking! I look forward to your comments!

wow, that's pretty bad...actually the body looks like the worst part, the interior isn't terrible, the seats are well, interesting...are they comfortable?...but those random switches, and the DIN bezel, need to go...
questions:
does it run at all?
are you looking to keep the aftermarket body kit look? or are you loking to return it to OEM exterior?
what condition are the suspension/steering components in?

Sorry it took me a while to reply, but Yes it does run, the thing is right now I have to jump it off, and when I leave it running the battery doesn't charge but I am hoping that it is the battery and not the alternator.
I do like the aftermarket body kit that is on it right now.
I haven't been able to drive it because the rims are bent and the Left Front tire is flat so I currently do not know the condition of the Suspension/Steering components.
The seats are comfortable! Thank you for taking your time to reply to my post and hopefully you will be able to help me figure out where I should start with the car.

1. get the engine running properly, new spark plugs, air filter, injector cleaner etc...try a new battery, get the alternator tested, change the oil.
2. get a new bumper, wheels and tires...
3. inspect brakes and suspension steering...check that there is still friction material on the pads, rear drums you have to take the drum right off...make sure there is no free play in ANY of the bushings (bushing flex is ok, but knocking, wobbling is bad) also ensure there is not free play in the ball joints and tie rod ends, and make sure the stabilizer bar bushings and end-links are intact.

Hello & welcome! Cranswick covered everything. He's one of the more experienced guys on here.
I'm sure you can put this together with some time & effort. Piece by piece, bit by bit, it will come together. Take your time and ask questions
