I actually debadged my car today and i found a little problem that nobody discussed. Rather than post a completely new thread, i figured i would keep this one going for the sake of not getting the standard fare of "try the search function"

Here is my situation:

I went out to do the deed. the weather was decent. not hot, nor cold. I dont have access to a hair dryer or an extension cord long enough to reach the parking lot of my apartments, so i used a suggestion from another forum to use hot water and slowly pour it over the letter to heat the adhesive, then saw at it with dental floss. (the site actually said boiling water, but i just couldnt bring myself to do that) so i carefully removed the letters one by one until all that was left was my triple diamond and some glue that spelled out lancer. Then i started going after the glue with hot, soapy water and a rag. then when i would stop making progress i would hit it with a few quirts of goo gone and wait five minutes, then start scrubbing again. in about 2 hours time i had removed all traces of the adhesive and there was no fading to screw up the look but i noticed that the paint was chipped down to a white layer in the shape of the outline of each letter. i didnt use anything abrasive to scrub, just a cotton towel. and warm soapy water. it wasnt the goo gone either because it is chipped, not eaten away. i dont have an explanation. you cannot see it from more than a foot away, but im more worried about oxidation. any suggestions?

I guess no two cases are alike. Mine came off completely and easily with the use of dental floss. I did not heat the area with anything. Of course, here in Atlanta it gets pretty hot anyway and that day was probably warm... What little adhesive residue remained, I removed with cleaner wax and it's all gone. I never noticed any traces of the badges after I removed them. One factor could be that I removed my badges when the car was very new. Perhaps after the car ages and the paint is exposed to sunlight and the elements, the part under the badges will not discolor as much as the rest....

i checked around town but nobody even has ANY shade of yellow touch up paint. . . ay suggestions on where to get it. my paint doesnt seem to be faded so anywhere that has the stock OZ color should be fine. Here are some pics of what im talking about.

Here is a long shot with half the pic desaturated. you cant see anything from here and this is about five feet away.

This is right up on the place where the "L" was. you can see the white chipped area that makes the shape of the "L".

This final shot shows all of the letters. in the color version of this image you cannot see any of the white spots nor did i see the difference in color until i desaturated it. so apparently my paint is slightly faded, but if its not enough to notice when i put my face right up to it i dont care.

so what do y'all think? just get some touch up paint wherever. or should i just go get my trunk repainted?

Man that looks very bad. I think you made some mistakes on that job. Those deep swirls are a sign of too much rubbing or abrasives used. Also, there is definitely a problem with the way the badges removed the paint along with the adhesive.... I'd not mess with touch up paint or any other half-a$$ed solution. You can probably find a body shop that'll repaint the affected areas for not too much money. I'd guess it could cost as little as $200 but you need to shop around.

Good luck!

oh, sorry qabout that. i forgot to explain the swirls.... thats petroleum jelly. i did not wat to wax the spot with those chips there adn i dont want any moisture getting in there. i wiped it with alcohol and then put the vaseline on it until i find a solution.

just because i have newb on my name doesnt mean im gonna keep rubbing when my paint starts looking like that..

as fara s the chips. like i said, i didnt use anything abrasive or sharp. i didnt rip the badges off, carefully and slowly worked them off and then used the soapy water to remove the glue.

yeah... I had some weird paint thing goin on when I took the OZ badge/sticker off.

Hard to explain that really.. but as I said they may be able to sand, throw a lil paint then wetsand it to match. they might not even need to sand. mabey some touch up and wetsand.

if you read up on it you could probably do it yourself. Little soapy water and some sandpaper.

You say that 200 is a reasonable price for the trunk repainting. what if i just wanted to go a different color altogether. what would you all say is a reasonable price for a full paint job. nothing fancy, no candy or chameleon crap, just a new color. i say this because the paint is old and theres some tar on my fender that i have not for the life of me been able to remove, so if i need to get the trunk repainted because of this crap that was hidden behind the badging, i might as well get the whole car done depnding on the price

I'm only guessing based on what I paid to get my rear bumper repaired and painted (had a small defect from a minor "ouch"). Paint jobs are advertised at all sorts of prices, but you generally get what you pay for. From what I know, changing colors is much more expensive that repainting with the original color. I would have no idea of the cost but for sure, a cheap paint job of that sort is gonna be horrible unless you luck out in a major way. Maaco and other franchises offer reasonably inexpensive paint jobs. If you need body work, the price goes up. I cannot say what it would cost you to do what you want, but I'd suggest shopping around.

Good luck!

same thing happened to me. i ahve a black lancer and damn did that outline show. unfortunately i decided to to the work myself and wet sand it down slowly, unfortunately by the time it dissapeared it was down to no clear coat. when i got in an accident the body shop guy said he'd redo my whole trunk if i'd like, so 125 dollars later.... new trunk paint
