Eyelids on my car. Yay or nay?

I cant decide if i want to get eyelids for my 2003 OZ Rally. I mean they look nice, but if i were to ever decide to black out my headlights, that would be a waste of money to just get the eyelids now (if i WERE to black them out, its at the very least a year in the future).

Currently im getting a full Magnaflow catback exhaust, but i figured i would pay an extra $50 just to get the regular fiberglass eyelids. So the two questions are, how much would a regular body shop charge to paint the eyelids, and do you think it would look nice on my car? (Link is below)

Thanks.

I'm kind of torn on eyelids...my question is, are you comfortable with going the DIY route on painting your headlights? I did mine (however I grew up in a body shop) and it wasn't difficult at all. I will say that eyelids do give our Lancers a more aggressive look. By the way...a big on the Magnaflow. I recently did a custom Magnaflow catback (non-polished muffler/tip using 2 1/4 pipe) and I love it!!

Good luck with your mods

You can just paint the eyelids yourself really easily... www.paintscratch.com and order the little spray can kit with clearcoat they offer. Just select your paint color and put in ur VIN number to verify, and your all set. Its fairly cheap too. I did my eyelids and grill that way, and both turned out with a showroom quality finish to them. Wetsanding also helps too. You can read up and do a search here on evom, I know I covered exactly how to do it all sometime a while back. There's plenty of threads on it.

But your car looks pretty stock as of right now. I would recommend doing the blacked out headlights FIRST before the eyelids. That way, when you have to bake the headlights open them up to paint them, the eyelids don't get in the way of anything or get messed up. The eyelids definetly make the front end look a little more aggressive and sleek though. You might also want to look at the different style grills for the lancer too while you are at it. The stock mitsu "thong" grill isn't too popular and almost looks out of place on the lancer.

Yeah, well i was a bit sketchy about blacking out my headlights to begin with. I had a 2004 Lancer before i got in an accident (stupid *** people), and i thought the blacked out headlights would look tight, but then i got a 2003 and i kind of like the way the headlights look now, so im not really set on blacking them out.

But yeah, my car is pretty stock, just the window tint and thats all. Inside i just have a different head unit, other than that, its bare bones. I just ordered an intake system, getting the catback within a few weeks, and probably the eyelids from the same site. I guess i could do it myself, i mean, i would feel safer if a pro did it. Would a shop like Advanced Auto Parts sell the kind of paint i am looking for? Eyelids do give that aggressive look though, thats why i like them, but i love the way the stock lamp looks, so it might cover up a bit of that.

As for the Mitsubishi "thong", i never had a problem with it, i noticed people here on the boards have some issues with it. In the future, i planned on getting a different grill, but whatever grill i get, i definately want a Mitsubishi symbol, its something i just want there. Thats in the future though.

That's cool...as long as you like the look of the headlights and grille, that's all that matters. In that case, I would def go with the eyelids first. I'd guess that Advanced, Auto Zone etc would have the small spray cans that you would need. It will most likely be Duplicolor paint...just match up the paint code and you're set. If you haven't painted before, just do a few thin coats instead of laying it on thick (obviously to avoid runs). It wouldn't hurt to get a can of clear, hit it with about three or so thin coats and mildly wet sand with 1000 grit followed by 2000 grit after it cures well. Hell, it will probably look better than our factory paint jobs at that point.

Heh, ill keep that in mind. I will swing by once they come in (still a couple weeks off) to take a look at all of that. But yeah, like i said the grill looks fine to me, i mean nothing to complain about, but i definately wouldnt mind fixing it up a little bit. Cant wait for it all to go through.

eh... the paint from Advanced Auto or Autozone doesn't really match up. I've ordered their 'mitsubishi yellow' color that was supposed to match mine, and it was a lot darker. You will want to go to www.paintscratch.com and order from there. Trust me, if you paint it yourself you will thank me later that it matches. Paintscratch.com will take back your order if the paint doesn't match and send you another batch to try. They give you a little test card thing to paint on to test the color match.

I take it that mine is "Lightning yellow"? Because i have seen other yellow Lancers before, and they were a bit different of a shade than mine is.

Good looking out wiretap. Yeah, I would trust his route much more than local auto parts stores. And yep, Lightning Yellow should be correct.

yes.. and just to be positive, there is a little color code thing in your engine bay. It is a little steel plate thing located on the firewall passenger side. It should say Y01. (lightning yellow)

Yay!

I bought cf eyelids from rrm and then decided to paint my headlights. I just pealed them off. scraped off the dbl sided tape and painted them. then put cf eyelids back on. looks great, imo.

so my answer is yes. Its a great idea.

I love my eyelids... It really helps complete the aggressive look of the entire car.
