Need Info On Rims

i was out shopping for rims for my 2002 OZ lancer, thinking it was easy until the question about "offset" came up, like 40mm and 38 mm. what the hell is that?? and what "offset should i get?

also, if i get some 17" with 205/40/R17 rubbers....am i in danger of bending the rim driving over some pot hole?
one last deboggle...what width should i get..17x6, 17x7, 17x7.5 and so on and so on..???

for 17x7's offset 40. tires (i would reccomend) 215/40/17, its the same height at the stock and keeps the speedo the same. (no rubbing with these tires)

205's are really really thin, youll surely bang up those rims. Especially in california. If you like, get these tires and lower your car cuz youll just increase the gap above the wheels and fender.

i've decided on some racing hart M5 multi-piece...look-a-likes tho..im not willing to go and spend 4 grand on some funky rims...so the bottom line is..17" rims with an offset of 38mm, wrapped in 215/40/17....sounds good?
