yes you can paint the sides.

 

$289 isnt cheap for a spoiler really... you can get a fiberglass one or ABS Plastic Evo VII spoiler on ebay for $100 + shipping. 3 times that for a CF one isnt "cheap" but its also about the best price you will find.
