Hey guys, I actually think I might want to paint my own body kit. I think it would be a good experience to learn how too. What do I need to start? How much would an airbrush kit and an air compressor cost me? Does anyone want to learn with me here in so cal that lives close to Valencia? Anyone know the first steps I should do? So many questions... So little knowledge...
you would have to buy a compressor and if you want you can use my airbrush gun. you would want a compressor that can kick out 50-60 PSI, other than that there's no real requirement, i believe. most paint stores can mix the factory color of your car for you - the more expensive ones use a spectrophotometer to get the EXACT color of your car (to account for the paint fade over time since you bought the car)... much more expensive, and mostly unnecessary. seeing as how you're on a budget i wouldn't go that route - i would just get the factory color. then of course you'll need paint... and someone to do it with you! if kareem can't help out, i might be able to give you a hand... i did my kit with kareem and feel like i could do a good job given the opportunity.
so here's the shopping list:
1. compressor (this is probably gonna be bucks, bro, but check prices on ebay)... you can use my gun rather than buy one... that saves you about $150...
2. sandpaper (400 grit, 500 grit, 1000 grit, 1200 grit, 2000 grit; 'bout 3 sheets of each at least)
3. primer (for that whole kit you'll need 5-6 cans of primer from autozone or somewhere similar)
4. paint (i went through about 4 quarts on just the FB, RB, and SS, and i wish i had more. you'll probably need at least 6 quarts)
5. the stuff you mix with the paint (think it's called actualizer, i don't really remember, kareem can refresh my memory)
6. clear coat (you'll probably want at least 2 quarts of this, too, maybe 3-4 so that you can do a few layers)
7. actualizer for the clear coat
oh ya... and a garage to paint in! let me know if you've got any questions, or if you're interested in me helping out at all.

If you want to try it, I've had great success with www.paintscratch.com, they were able to match the factory paint on my blaze yellow WRX.

LoL I have no idea how to paint cars but if I have extra time aside from work/school I would be interested in helping. I go to school at C.o.C. & live in NorthBridge....(right near Best Buy/Valencia High)

Thats cool, I am going to learn how to paint from Kareem, maybe you can ask him, if you want to just learn how? We are going to do it at his house sometime within the next month.
