Are those hd lights illegal? The really bright ones

Was just wondering ive seen some cars with those ultra ultra ultra bright lights and was wondering could you get tickets for that or is it legal? Also what brand is the best in those light bulbs? Also in order to install them do i have to put my headlights in the oven and break the seal or what?

Bulbs come out from the back of the headlight. You do not have to bake the headlight.

Some are illegal and some are not. You should check into the bulb if it is D.O.T approved. Also check your state and local laws, many places are different.

All aftermarket headlight bulbs have burnt out for me. Maybe 6 months after or even maybe 2 months. They were all different. Sylvania Silverstars lasted the longest for me, but still burnt out.

I needed to buy 2 new ones since I have one bright one and one stock one right now and I got ones off of Ebay, the 6000k ones. They say they are D.O.T. approved and lifetime guarantee. Search for them, they are by Eurodesins or something like that. They are on the way to my house now, I will let oyu know how they are.

Suppose to be the best, but like I said, they still burnt out on mine. Like $20-$30 I believe. Our bulb number is 9007.

I think it is the Lancer's wiring that makes the light burn out? Anyone have a thought?

I doubt its the wireing aftermarket bulbs burn out quick on most cars. I had an integra that I ran those bulbs on and the best I ever did with any set was 9 months most sets were right around 4-6 months. Didn't seem to matter if I spent 15 bucks a set or 40 bucks a set they were all about the same. Im just glad I don't have to worry bout those anymore (Got true HID's). As far as which are legal make sure they are DOT approved like pumpdog said.

what are HD lights? you mean you want true HID lights? if you just want bulbs listen to what pumpdog said. but if you want true HID, it is illegal, but you see so many cars driving with it on.. and who here does mods that keep their car legal anyway? it all depends on where you plan on driving in new jersey. if you want to keep it safe, go with a low temperature HID kit so that it comes out a really bright white.. but if you dont give a crap and want the blue or purple color, go with a higher temperature kit. just adjust your beam pattern a little when you install it though..

put it this way:
lower temperature = brighter, more white
higher temperature = dimmer, more blue / purple

when i say the lights get 'dimmer' as you get higher in the temperature range, it means its dimmer compared to the lower temp ones, but still a hell of a lot brighter than stock. i just aimed my beam pattern really low so that it doesnt blind people in front of me or blind the oncoming traffic. i also aimed it low so that my cutoff line, when im behind you, looks like its a pure white instead of that blue color you see in my registry. my HIDs ran me about $400 installed, but they could range in price from anywhere between $400-$700 installed. just FYI, if you plan on getting just bulbs, there is no way in hell you could get them as bright as true HID even if you get high wattage bulbs. oh and btw, you do not need to open your headlights to install these kits. so, if you really wanted to know about true HID, i hope this post was helpful.. but if you were jus looking for bulbs, sorry for the long post hehe . but if you have any more questions hit me up with a PM or hit me up on aim..

this pic shows my HIDs a little too bright because i left my shutter speed at .5 seconds . sorry, but you get the idea

they flicker for the first few seconds because they need to warm up.

as for HIDs being illegal, its only the aftermarket ones that are because of uncontrollable glare and they're way too bright.. the ones that come stock on lexus, acura, and bmw, have controlled beam patterns so that it doesnt cause excessive glare and for the most part, are used with projector headlights, not like our reflector type headlamps.

Some information about HID conversions.

edit: here's a quote:

The quantity and nature of the light put out by the arc is quite different from that of the filament, and the reflector and optics of a halogen headlamp are not designed to produce a proper headlamp beam with anything but a halogen bulb. Even assuming the arc position were perfectly matched-up with the filament position, the nature of the light from an HID capsule is such that the resultant beam pattern will usually produce very much excessive glare to oncoming drivers and backdazzle to the driver in bad weather, and will fail to illuminate properly the places in the driver's field of vision that really need to be illuminated.

^ again, they have controlled beam patterns out the factory. it is also because most luxury cars come with projector headlights. even if they didnt have projector headlights, im pretty sure those companies would find a way to rearrange the reflectors in the back of the housing to have a proper light output and reduced glare.

who cares if HID is illegal, just get a modest temperature HID kit, and put it in, makes your car a million times beter, if my acura didn't have it already i would install HIDs

...now let's do some HID fog lights

Thumbs down

You guyz make me laugh ...LoL

You cannot just change a light bulb and get true HID ! the only true HID lights are those on high end cars like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi etc.. they use a high power transformer to power a flash bulb(thats where the bluish tint comes from !) and costs like $3500-$5000.

The bulbs that you buy from PIAAA, Eurolite are not HID ! they are simply blue tinted halogen or Xenon bulbs and thats why they are illegal since the tint on them makes them actually darker then the stock DOT approved bulbs and you become a traffic hazard in the rain, snow and the dark(you won't see any visible light in these conditions) and thats why the cops will give you a ticket. Inorder for these companies to pass DOT standards, they made the bulb filiment thinner inorder to increase wattage on the bulbs to produce the same amount of light as the stock bulbs, but in doing so the bulbs will burn out easily if they hit a bump or when they receive some shock. So the moral of the story is the stock bulbs are the best, either plain halogen or Xenon without the blue tints.
