Hey guys, First of all i need to rant a bit...

When you guys are at a car show or an audio show... please keep your grubby, greasy little fingers off of the cars on display. ESPECIALLY subwoofers when they're bumping and ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY when any part of the cone is aluminum. If I catch any ****tard putting his finger anywhere near my car, imma have em chopped off with my katana.

Aight, so I know alot of you wanna learn to make cool **** with fiberglass and stuff. In this tutorial imma be making this trunk setup come to life:



Also if you guys are lucky, (basically if i feel like it), the last layer on the box after sanding it smooth will be.... DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNN... Carbon Fiber.

Let's start off by saying goodbye to my old box (It's ****in HUGE! 4cuft with all the displacement calculated).









Now here's the blank slate left to work with (It's dynamatted from before):

 

Aight now here we go...

Here's the basic stuff we're gonna be using (Fiberglass mat for strength, Fiberglass cloth for smoothness, Foam brushes to apply the resin, and a nice sized batch of resin).



Step 1: Use masking tape to tape up the area you're gonna be fiberglassing. Be sure to extend a few inches past where it's gonna be trimmed down to.



Step 2: Lay down some fiberglass matting and trim it to the shape of the bottom (doesnt have to be perfect, should come up the sides of the well a bit.



Step 3: ZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZz......

Dammit im tired, i'll continue tomorrow. I dont wanna **** this mold **** up cuz it's real important. Nite ladies and gents...

I got talked into making a fiberglass enclosure instead of the box. So right now im molding the two rear parts where the taillights are to put a 10" PG Titaniums in there. I cant wait to see how botched i can make mine lol. But i cant wait to see your design that will look very nice .

 

I work in a shrink's office... no wonder im crazy enough to do all that DIY work

Im resuming where i left off now. Oh and another reason i left off before laying the resin down is cuz it's cold @ night so i'd have to use extra hardener, but right now it's a nice warm 90 so i can use less hardener (ideal temp for the resin is 70 degrees).

Aight boys and girls... I fiberglassed the first layer of matting this morning. Waiting for it to dry before i pull out and start adding more layers. Here are some pix:

Dont use a foam cup for mixing the resin

Dont use those flexible foam brushes... they break easy

Heh...its fun to melt stuff with 'glass....

'Glass eats foam regularly, but when you mix it hot enuf, it will eat thru a 7-11 big gulp cup...

It's funny...

We use metal containers now....lol

i love your DIY guides, you always take great pics, expain everything really well

 

Man does that stuff get hot though its nutz ... we were fiberglassing and it gelled up in the cup. So when it came out it was a big chunk ... and after the layer cooled in the car it was still hot enough to flash boil water on it . This pic was after hitting it with water. We were worried of it catching the dry grass on fire lol.

 

No update yet, im still adding a few layers to it before i attempt to pull it out. My mistake was i used regular masking tape and not the green waxed painters tape. This is gonna be a ***** to pull out.

 

Aight here is an update:

1 Layer done and dried, chopped mat peices in the corner:

After 3-4 hours imma start pulling this mold out. Ill take plenty of pictures to show why you shouldnt use regular masking tape versus the green waxed painters tape.

 

To answer the question about why i didnt do the whole tub is cuz of 2 reasons. #1 is the jack holder.... i cant get it out. I'd use a cutoff wheel but i dont wanna go through the pain of doing it. #2 is cuz the area i did has 2.72 cuft of airspace. The sealed enclosure for my 1 sub calls for 1.5cuft maximum (im gonna do 2-2.5 for deeper bass). So I cant use the whole tub cuz it'll make the airspace too big.
