I lowered mine over a year ago, and I have done no damage underneath my car. Granted I am more careful about where I take my car.

It all depends on the amount you drop the car, the area you live and your purpose. If you are doing it for looks just keep in mind the area you live, a lot of lips, pots holes (frost heaves for us in cold areas) are all going to cause you to bottom out if you go too low. I even heard a story that a guy up here was riding with his coilovers as low as they could go in his eclipse and he welding the oil drain bolt to the oil pan from scraping the ground so much. Not the greatest decision when you live in maine. If you are going for handling try to find something with not so much a drop, but mainly a stiffer spring.
I notice you have an ES, as do I, and you have to be very careful about the springs you order because most companies make springs for only the OZ and LS lancer which has a slightly different suspension set up. I'm going with RRM springs for autox, they seem to be the best out there for the ES that i can find. I wish it wasnt such a drop (I rally cross also) but until i can save up for my adjustables (which may be a better option for you) I'm going with those for now. Haha good thing we are fabricating a skid plate for my car.

A good rule of thumb is that most cars can be lowered about 1.5 inches without complications. Beyond that, changes in a severely lowered car’s suspension may negatively affect ride quality, tire wear and increase the risk of "bottoming."
