What to do with bump stops

I got the Progress 1.5 drop on my 03 OZ. The directions say to cut the bump stops in half. I left them all on except for the front driver one I did cut. I wanted to see the change in suspension travel to see if it is really worth it. Well, the one that I did cut make a ton of noise...so I got a new one and put it in so back to sqare one right?...Nope. When I hit smaller bumps its nice and smooth but when I hit larger ones...it's only the front driver side that clicks. It's actually sounds like metal hitting metal. I kinda sounds like it is blown but I really don't think so after 19,000 miles. What do you guys think it could be? You think I hooked something up wrong? Is anyone elses making this noise?

Tim

I think the noise is inherit with the Progress kit. On mine the front pass side is much noisier than the drivers side. I took them off, checked everything and put it back together, but it still does it. Nothing has fallen off my car yet, and I've had them on for 30K miles now.

Yeah, take it easy on the potholes and go get some bump stops. That loud *** thud is most likely your strut compressing as far as it can go. The bump stop keeps it from doing that. And it bottoming out like that I can assue you is bad for them

No bump stops are the tan/yellow looking thing on the tip of the shocks..... I got a set of teins and their awsome... no sounds nice and smooth..... i had to cut the bump stop too.... just cut the first stud off..... do both sides not just one side... that'll mess up your whole suspension system when you hit a bump....

The thud is your strut bottoming out all the way and hitting the top mount for sure.

the other thing is why is only one making the noise? it seems to be louder as i am driving slower. it sounds like more of a rattle. at first i thought it was the brake line but then i double checked. then i thought it was the fuse for my amp but there is that padding on the hood so nothing under the hood is rattling. does everyone else that dropped there car keep there bumpstops on? did you cut them?

yes, I kept my bump stops, yes I cut them about in half, and like I said before, with the progress kit, noise is just part of it.

Well I solved the problem. I know the strut wasn't bottoming out because I had the full bump stop in there. And just because they are progress springs doen't meant they should just make noise. Well I took the whole assembly off for the third time and this time I noticed some wear and tear on the spring itself. at the very top of the spring right below the upper mount the spring was touching spring. So under full compression the spring was slapping itself. Oddly enough it was only the front driver side that was doing. Anyways, I went to the hardware store and got three feet of rubber hose ($1.50) and rapped it around the top of the spring and it sounds perfect. (Like it should, not just because they are progress). Well for those of you that are having the same problem take a look at your spring.

You could just leave you bump stops in tack and not cut them. Or you could cut them in half. This would allow more travel distace from your strut and it would sit lower. You see on your bump stop the bottom two sections are the same size and the top one is smaller...cut right in between the two sections that are the same size and now you have two sections of bump stop. throw away the smaller of the two sections and replace that larger half on your strut. Remember to also replace the dust cover.
