Paddle Shifter?

I've seen commercials for the new Lancer with a paddle shifter on the steering wheel. I was wondering what it does, if it is for Auto or Manual? Looks pretty cool honestly.

It's for Auto. It comes with a Manual or CVT Auto trans. (paddle shifters)

Is it compatible with older style ES,OZ, and Rally editions from 02-07? Or what years does it work with? Does that also mean you have to have a CVT Auto trans to use it?

It comes on the 08. You can get either full manual or CVT. Are you asking if you can just put paddle shifters on an 02-07? If so then no you can't to the extent of my knowledge. I think I read a thread a long time ago about a slap stick conversion that is for the mirage that works with the lancer, but I havent really heard or seen anything else about it. If I remember right there is a stick that comes with that you mount somewhere so you can do the shifting, but that is all I can really remember.

In this case, all the shift paddles do is tell the ECU to move the CVT to a different preset gear ratio and hold it, so you can't retrofit the setup to an older lancer.

So it's not to where it moves the gears from drive to park, neutral, etc...?

From what I've seen and read, paddle shifters seem to work best with auto trannies. I guess, it's like Shiftronic, I'm no engineer, I just always see Paddle Shifters on automatics. There was an EVO wagon, I think maybe tuned with GReddy parts -it's been a while since I read the article- in Japan that was an automatic, and the tuner shop was developing paddle shifters for it.

No. You still have to select what mode the trans is in with the center console selector, then you can use the paddles to change up/down through the gears. I feel paddle shifters on automatics tend to be more of a "bells & whistles" type gadget than an actual useful gear selector as seen on sequential manuals.

Does that mean it will work on the 02-06 Automatics then? Or is there a specific class only?

You do not have a CVT transmission and you can't just put paddle shifters on your car. The automatics from 02-07 are fully automatic. There are none that have sportronic shifting of paddle shifters that I know of.

Is the CVT transmission the same size as the rest of the models Ralliart, LS,ES I wonder? If I could do a transmission swap I'd try it just for fun.

I think even if it was similar in size your biggest problem would be the electronic side of it. Obviously anything can usually be done with lots of money and time, but i don't think the outcome would be worth it.

U can't just swap the CVT in. U'd need a whole new ECU to control the variable gears, plus the new lancer comes with a completly new engine that fits that CVT trans.

Would a Greddy Emange Ultimate take care of the problem with the ECU?
