To my suprise...CVT downshift from Auto
Ok so if you don't know too much about the paddle shifters here is a little background.
You can run the car is "manual"(Stick or paddle shifter mode) or automatic. If in automatic you can hit a paddle and it will jump over to Paddle shifting and them you can hold the up paddle for 2 seconds to get it back into automatic again.
Well I just found out that it has a draw back. Lets say you are in drive (automatic tooling along) well if you grab the shifter and pull it over it changes the D on the screen to the appropriate gear like 3rd then you are manual from there until you pull the stick back over. So let’s say you took off from a light and then hit the 4th gearing ratio and then pull the stick back over into drive and let it Auto the way through the rest until you are on the highway. Well now you are going along at 80 MPH and you decide to put it back in manual mode. No problem grab the stick pull it over and now you see a 6 appear and you are on your way. Well lets say decided not to grab the stick lets say you knew that just grabbing the paddle shifter would send you into manual...well here is the Mitsubishi screw up. This happened to me last night on the highway as I grabbed the paddle to lower into what I thought would be 5th gear I was surprised to find out that it went into 3rd. Thank God it was right short of red line and I grabbed and shifted back up real quick.
It appears when you shift over from automatic to manual by just grabbing a paddle that it remembers the last gear you were in when the stick was physically moved over and it starts from there as opposed to starting at the gear you are closest to like 6th.
WOW!!!!
If you don't understand what I mean just think blown transmission…

So you were just before the redline? I dont have a new lancer but in my 02 auto, depending on the speed, if you just hit the gas and the car down shifts, it will sometimes downshift to the lowest gear it can without red lining... Say if i am going close to 60-upper 50's and hit the gas, the car will down shift to second and be around57-5900 rpm... I say experiment with it a bit...
Yes, please let us know what you find out. I'm getting ready to buy a GTS towards the end of this month; since the CVT is the only option for a transmission (the wife demands an automatic) I'd like to know beforehand that I had better be careful when shifting into manual mode.

let me get this straight... ur on auto mode and u decide to shift down with the paddle. along the way u decide to return it to "D". now while ur on D u go up to 80mph and then u decide to downshift with the paddle, u get the last gear ur at, when i first started off? im kinda slow
Yes that is pretty much what I am saying. Last night I played with it for awhile. I flipped the stick over run it up to 4th gear and flipped it back off. I got on the highway and got up to about 80 and just hit the paddle and it started at 4th gear the exact gear I flipped from. I tried it at lower speeds like going up to 2nd gear and then flipping the stick back over and then speeding up to 40-50ish and hitting a paddle....here comes 2nd again.
My wife got sick because I could not stop testing it. Knocked up girls / food / hard shifting makes for a sick wife. Can't believe I let her eat in there but I will tell you the truth never get inbetween a prego and her food...WOW!
Either way I am going to hit up the dealer and find out if they know about this...

OK this is scary I discussed it with my co workers and they agree. I will test it on mine when i leave but of course to a much lesser engine popping extent. Is there some group we can talk to about these issues. just curious
