Coasting/Engine Braking with the CVT

Impossible? I believe this is the one MAJOR downfall of the CVT unless its just my car.

If you leave the car in AutoCVT it constantly adjusts the ratios, meaning when you let off the gas it will down shift slowly basically engine braking on its own making its coast factor very poor.

While in ManualCVT it doesnt do it as bad because you can stay in a higher gear that is a SET ratio alittle longer, but it will still down shift on its own if youre border line in a ratio.

So am i crazy or does ACVT suck for coasting and MCVT is just a tad better but still poor compaired to normal AT and MT?

Reason i bring this up is because ive been without my car and forced to drive everything else and notice that i can put my trailblazer or mustang to a speed and let off the gas and just float down the road with no decrease in speed unless theres a change in road level.

Also i know MT/MCVT engine braking was mentioned in another thread but i wanted to ask.. is it healthy for the tranny/engine? wouldnt it be better to just brake and wear them out alittle more rather than downshift like that?

You aren't hurting your engine/tranny one bit. No worries.

Not real sure what to say on the coasting thing. It is what it is. *shrug*

Sorry guys but I love it . I love the fact that it slows down. You have to remember that its a sensor for your gas pedal not a cable . If you just slightly touch the gas it wont do it . I guess this does not solve your issue but I guess you will get used to it. As i said I really like it especially for City Driving. I beleive the CVT and the car learns your driving style. So drive it and see if it figures you the driver out..

Oh yeah i love it to lol, better breaking without even having to break. Its just i like to "roll" home from a certain point, some random fun i use to always have to see if i could put the car to a certain speed from a point and make it all the way home without touching the gas lol.. but this car doesnt roll too well due to the constant gear changes.

Its a good thing overall but sometimes can be bad if it really affects gas efficiency.

Not too sure about that. IMO, I would prefer to pay for brakes than a new tranny.
