loss of 4th gear. 02 LS auto trans

recently i was driving along and my car jumped, whent down to 3rd, and threw the cel. i shifted down to 1st, after slowing down enough, and slowing made my way back up the auto trans to D, 4th. it still didnt engage, it just stayed in 3rd with high rpms. i park it and drive another vehichle to work, upon getting home i go and check the cel at an oreileys. while driving there i have use of 4th again, but im still showing a cel. i use their diagnostic tool to check my code. no code is given, but i had the option to reset the code. so i reset the code and drive it home in hopes of the code throwing so i can get a read. no luck, i wreck. nothing mechanical, all body work. i got it back today, drove it several places and miles. the same thing happened again. i park at a gas station, check for anything unfamiliar, and continue driving. my 4th engaged again. i have no clue what is up, and help would be greatly appreciated. i am going to dissconnect the battery tonight and reset all the electronics. could someone please help me before i sell this piece?

When was the last time you flushed the trans? Sorry about the accident!

thanks dude. hah, thats just it, i was about to do that and a couple other maintenance things the day it initally happened. and i was going to work on it more the day after, but that was canceled by the accident. could an overdue change be the cause of this? i considered it, but i would think a long drive to work this morn would have caused it, not what actually happened today, a few miles leaving work. regardless, could this be the cause?

Not sure about any relay, but flush it. If that doesn't do it, try a new filter. If that doesn't do it, then check that relay.

speed sensor on the tranny . . . I thought lancer has an internal filter that cannot be changed w/o pulling the tranny apart (like 1g acura legend). In 02, all mirage went to such filter system over an externl filter.

Worse case: torched OD.

yeah, i think the filter is internal as well. i have yet to flush it, but i never reset the cel, and then this morning it was gone. no cel, after an entire weekend of cel. should i just trade this in before i get hosed in trans work? because imo the the cost to fix the trans isnt worth it.

Yeah, the filter is internal...just not sure what all a replacement might take.
