Lubricant for Shifter and Linkage Bushings

Lubricant for Shifter and Linkage Bushings

Hey everyone I decided to start a new thread on this subject because I simply could not find any concise info on the boards.

-What is the best lubricant for the shifter? I know of the "modern lubricant" that comes with the B&M, but I couldn't find it on their website or anywhere for sale. That stuff worked pretty well, but I'm really hoping I can find something at a local store. I tried some generic lithium grease which did not work well at all. Any tried and true suggestions? Please list where you got the grease, whether it be online or otherwise.

-What's best to use for those stiff tranny linkage bushings I bought from kartboy? I threw some of that lithium on them, which again did not hold up under the hood and did not improve shifter feel. I remember I used the last of my B&M grease on these and it worked great for a few months until it dried up. Any suggestions especially ones that won't degrade the material of the bushings?

I have the fidanza short shifter and speed source UH and base bushings.

For the UH bushing I used lots and lots of anti-seize(small gray bottle) for everything else I just dumped a whole lot of white lithium grease on there. BTW, if your grease ''dries up'' you should try another brand because it shouldn't.

General rule of thumb, for anything that risks being exposed to water and humidity, use anti-seize. For everything else I suppose any good grease could do.

My car just went through a Canadian winter and that without the slightest of troubles.

Wow great response that's exactly what I was looking for! So, to the auto store for some anti-seize and some better white lithium.

If you don't mind, is there any particular thing I should look for when picking an anti-seize or lithium? I'm guessing just general common sense, but maybe something else?

ha bringing back from the dead because I am about to do this switch again. Does anyone have any tried and true methods of lubricating the shifter correctly? I used the anti-seize on the Underhood bushings which worked well, but I still feel as if I can't find a proper lube for the shifter.

How is silicone lube for this application?

I just used some grease from a tube at walmart. Silicone I think. Worked great for me.

Thanks for the input! I just did the swap and used a spray bottle of silicone. From what I can tell, it worked very well. We'll see if it holds up over time...

Hey... so some questions?????

what should i lubricate???? pictures?

and I am having trouble keeping the gear in 1, 3, 5 gear...and its been really cold and raining last 3 days...i think one of the shift linkage cables is frozen up...that possible???

Anti-seize is not really recommended as a grease for moving contact surfaces. It's only for stationary situations, like threaded, splined or press fit assemblies, parts that don't move with respect to each other during use.

Most urethane bushings can be lubed with silicone, specifically Dow Corning 111, it's really thick and sticky and will hold up under the hood. Only a full-line autoparts (Napa?) will have it or McMaster.com ships quick on both coasts. Certain situations some common Sil-glyde (Napa) may be a better choice, it's not quite as thick or durable but a little less sticky.

For aluminum or steel bushings any EP (extreme pressure) grease should work but your going to have to disassemble to lube properly. The Lithium spray is quick and dirty if you don't disassemble but is not as high pressure and doesn't last as long.

Yeah, it could be. When its below freezing, I have problems. Just lube up your bushings under the hood and the shifter. Make sure your cables aren't binding.

ok...so i know where the bushing are under the hood...is there an easier way of getting to them then going around the intake box???

how would i get to the shifter bushings?

i ended up changing the tranny fluid first

omg...major difference...i think the original fluid was still in there for 70,000 miles. it came out like water (well water is probably thicker). and there was a lot of it (not to much i think just right, but seemed like a lot).

I lubed up the bushings a little, just a dab of silicone on them. The drive was unbelievable!!! no noise, no pressure, no gears popping out. Feels like there is nothing there when I shift, so nice

rec interval is 30K

so now you need to change, brake fluid(flush), diff, transfer, P/S, coolant
