Question bout the gear

I am a really bad manual driver, and i hope this will never happen, but can you strip/destroy a gear?

If so, how much would a new one cost?

Just Hypotethical...

Yes - you could wreck a gear... More common would be burning hte clutch, or wearing out a syncro... none of which are cheap...

Best advice - learn to drive.

second best advice - dont shift crazy hard, dont downshift (unless you know how to), dont keep it in gear when coasting with the clutch in, and especially when launching, dont hold on to the clutch because thats a sure burner.

if you take it slow and normal it would be pretty hard to do anything too bad, but theres always that chance. good luck

yo quick question say your in like 3rd or 4th and coming to a stop is it a bad thing to run throught he gears says like 3rd 2nd then go to first...im not saying get into gears just push the clutch in and shift to those before you shift into 1st when you at the stop or whatever? i mean does that like hurt your transmission at all or should you just go from 4th to stop to 1st? hehe hope you guys can understand this

Wearing out a syncro - if you don't rev-match, the the outer gear surface wears... As the negine and output speeds need to be the same. Especially the case if you shift w/o clutching... Basically, you wear the surface off, and then the gear grinds unless it's a perfect shift.

There's no reason you should be downshifting to first when coming to a stop. There's also no reason you need to run through the gears downshifting. If you're in 5th doing 80 you can brake in gear down to around 50 or less, downshift to 3rd, and then 2nd if necessary. You don't want to shift just for the sake of shifting. It will put unecessary wear on your clutch, shift fork, synchros and your transmission in general.

as far as I know, if you destroy a gear, you need a tranny rebuild. But you don't need the entire rebuild. I don't know about a Lancer, but that would cost about $600-800 on a Trans Am.
