Strange winding-up noise

Alrt I need some advice on this problem I've been having for a while. I have an automatic 2002 Lancer ES all stock. When I step on the gas a certain amount, a strange noise always starts up in the engine bay. It almost sounds like something is winding up or spining. And it keeps making that noise as long as I keep pressing the gas at the certain amount, which is usually around 2-3K rpms. But it depends on how hard I'm pressing not the rpm most of the time. So I wanted to ask what the problem might be and what I can do to troubleshoot.

I bought the lancer when it had 43,000 miles on it. Now it has 50,000 miles. I noticed this problem during the summer and it's been happening ever since.

Most mitsubishis i know of don't last past 100,000. could be that your ride is on it's way out the door. you might have un-even compression. don't race your car till you figure out yur trouble. hope you change your oil regularly too.
