Stop Yelling!

If it is just a clicking noise an it is not real loud and goes away as soon as you touch the gas, it is probably normal.

I just can't believe Mitsu would make the engine knowing it makes this kinda noise.

I mean, c'mon, what rational person would not think something is wrong with their car?

And even if it is ok, who wants to drive a rattling car?

Mitsu already has a questionable reliability reputation. A lot of people I work with think Mitsus are crap. Of course, they are stoopid young-ens, but still.

I tried that, didn't help at all. Just made the car get worse gas mileage.

Ya know what, I'm not gonna take my car in.

Too much hassle, plus, I think Timzcat knows his stuff (among others!).

So, I will just chill, accept it, and move on!

And get some wheels! These steelies are driving me nuts!

Also some window tint!

well what it can be is the turbo trying to kick in and since he is taking it to a slow rmp it has no where to go.

The horrible horrible clicking noise. I think way too many people have this going on. Mitsubishi really needs to start taking a harder look at their crap to make sure it works peachy keen.

Mine has a clicking noise on first start up that reminds me of a lifter, but it goes away after 20-30 seconds as the engine warms up or the oil gets circulated. I only have 10K on it and it really doesn't bother me since it goes away, but it should not be a lifter bleeding off after such a short period of time. I have heard other Lancers that have the same problem but louder and longer. Mitsu needs to assess the situation and see it a revised lifter is needed. Contact your regional rep if the dealer refuses to investigate or offer an amicable solution.

Okay, here's my input to this topic. I've been having the "clicky ticky" problem as well. Here are my symptoms:

First off, the first time I heard this noise was in a drive through when my car was beside a wall. I had all the windows down and the stereo off. This was about a year ago, and ever since then I've been trying to figure out EXACTLY what conditions prompt this horrible (and somewhat embarrassing) noise. Here's what I've noticed.

In the winter (I live in the South, so we don't have many days below freezing) I notice the valve tick when the car starts up. It stops after the oil (I use either Mobil 1 5W-30 or Amsoil of the same weight) begins circulating. This, in my opinion, is not the problem we are addressing on this thread.

Once my car is warm, the noise appears between 1300 RPM and 2100 RPM. If the engine is under any significant load the noise disappears. I only notice the problem when I'm maintaining speed and neither accelerating nor engine braking. I hear it in ALL GEARS (I drive the 5spd) as well as neutral.

If I had to describe what the noise sounds like, it sounds like someone snuck into my parking lot one night, pulled off my valve cover, and dropped a couple of marbles on top of my valvetrain just to play a joke on me. It sounds more like I've got marbles hopping around in my engine than it does a repetitive valve tick (like the noise our cars make in the winter when we first start the engine).

I feel like it would be prudent to take the car into the dealership before my warranty runs out, at least to document the problem. I'm thankful that I've only done an intake mod to the powertrain, so it won't be hard to put stock intake back on and save hearing the service department tell me that my CAI somehow caused a valvetrain problem (hehe).

One thing's for sure, I WANT TO BE DAMN SURE THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE A WEAK POINT IN MY MOTOR AFTER I BEGIN MY FORCED INDUCTION INSTALL!!! I'm afraid that once I start adding significant power to the car, every "little problem" will become a VERY BIG PROBLEM.

Any thoughts?? HAS ANYONE had the problem permanently fixed by having ALL the lifters replaced? It seems like everyone who's had that done hears the noise again after a few thousand miles.

dude, that is EXACTLY what my car is/was doing. You just described it better!

So, I second that question. Anybody fixed it with the valve lifters?

But, also, it seems it is just the nature of the motor.

IT is the valve lash- you have air in it and you have to bleed it. To do this- park your car level. make sure it is at operating temperature. start from idle and slowly in 15 second intervals go from idle to 3000 rpm. once it hit 3000 rmp drop it off back to idle. you may have to dothis up to 30 times but the noise should stop.
