I was wondering if rear cam works on manual cars? 2008 lancer gts. how does the camera know when my car is in reverse when it's manual?

back up lights. Theres a sensor on your transmission. Its a little detent sensor basically a little on/off switch, very simple. When the shift rail goes into reverse it pops in the ball on the sensor contacting the two wires. Now whether or not its sending 12v through the sensor to the back up lights or providing a ground for the ecu to see and then going to the back up lights out of another pin on the ecu is the question. Either way you can hook it to the wire going to the b/u lights.
