Radio Fried

OKay so, i was having a highly respectable shop install an amp and subs into my 08 lancer... they disconnected the power wire from the radio then plugged it back in and there was no sound comming from the speakers.. so they sent me to the dealer.. they dealer said the radio shorted out and was fried...

The thing is noone really understands how it happene, not even mitsubishi. Any ideas?

The amp was still wired, and they more than likely didnt unplug the bat before they started working on the radio. Trust me someone in experienced was working on your car.

the guy who was working on it is definatly not inexperienced, hes worked on another car of mine and has done $10,000 systems and have come out perfect, he rarely makes a mistake, audio systems is all he does, its his life.

and there was no amp connected yet. nothing was wired in..

but the service manager at my dealer is awsome and hooked me up with a new radio under warrenty, if this one blows out.. the guy whose doing my system is gonna hook me up with a double din Unit for free and connect the steering wheel and bluetooth stuff to it and labor is completely free now, so its all good with me.

I was a professional installer for years and never unplugged the battery to install stereos, remote starters, alarms, navigation etc... If you know what you are doing it is fine, infact with the battery unplugged how could you test wires if a harness is not being used/missing.

A: did you sit and watch this happen or was this the story that was told to you?

B: $#!t happens... either could have been using a test light when testing for amp turn on, or accidently touched the remote turn on to ground.. (Both could short out the amp turn on)

C: 95% of the time there is no reason to disconnect the battery, newer vehicles can cause major havoc doing so. (98+ VW beetle won't run if you do that until you take it to the dealer and reprogram the ecu.)

im guessing it's B in one form or another. I have taken my RF nav out many times and hooked up a back up cam with no issues as have many others (some less experienced) . so yeah. hope for the best.

they didnt get as far as even thinking about installing the amp or any wiring.

They came to the conclusion that there was a power surge from the battery on the re conect of radio power... how gay

Hmm , are there aftermarket radio's that can re-enable the volume/track change controls from the steering wheel to be connected, and functional?

Just wondering, because I want to buy an aftermarket radio, but I want to continue to have my steering controls.
