Reverse Light and start up squeal
Reverse Light and start up squeal
So im deciding to keep this car for awhile and i want to get it back in shape. I had my clutch replaced and ever since then my reverse lights dont come on when i go into reverse. Any idea why and if its a simple fix. I looked for a button near the gear shift that it might hit but saw nothing.
Second when i start my car after its been sitting for about 5-8 hours sometimes less it sqeauls really loud and i have to push the gas to get it to stop. I had my timing belt and altinator belt replaced recently and pepboys says they are tight. Any other ideas, the AC is never on btw.
Any help would be great thanks!

is the squeal present when you start up and just idle there? or does it occur when you turn your steering wheel?
If you notice thats its when your turning the wheel , it might be your power steering pump. Mine has started to slowly crap out and it makes this squealing noise that sounds like the belts, when its really the ball bearing thats going bad.
if its not when you turn the wheel ,im stumped

I have no idea about the reverse light. I guess I could hunt down the info in my shop manual. Probably a simple fix, maybe a relay went out or a fuse blew. I would check your fuses.
The belts always should be tightened slightly after they've been on a while, because they will stretch out a little bit being brand new. You can do this easily with a couple of wrenches and a few minutes.

Well sorry to resurrect a thread from the dead.
But I am having a problem with my reverse lights too, they do not come on.
I don't have the car manual, is there a fuse for them? Or a button near the gear shift as Lancer02Josh says..
Thanks.

This seems to be common... My 2002 Lancer has the same symptoms... Except one time last year I noticed the lights came on... Never again since... Fuse is fine, bulbs are fine... must be a switch or sensor somewhere...
There is a switch in the transmission that has to be triggered. when i had a tranny replaced in my other car they forgot to reconnect it and i had to take it back and have them go back in and hook it up.
The squeal is your alternator belt, trust me on this one, ive been dealing with it for months. You need a 14mm socket and about half an hour to get in there and figure out the right tension so its not too tight but not loose enough to slip. (the sqeal is the belt slipping)

Aight, so the only way to get to it, is to take a part the transmission?

I went back to the place that put my trans in and they fixed the light. Now the squeel seems to have kind of gone away. It happens everyonce in while but not nearly as much as before. Still not sure what is was
If that's the case, it's not worth the trouble. If you indeed have to do that and really want you lights to work, just wire your own switch.
I really doubt you need to take the trans appart though. There must be a connector on the trans housing. Let me dig up my trans pictures...
Edit:
So there ya go... here's the picture.
I have circled two connectors on it. The left one is the speed sensor, and I'm not too sure about the top right one. Check them both and make sure they are still connected and make sure the internal connectors of the plugs are in good condition.
