helping a friend

My friend who owns a weightless white evo was installing red LED's in his dash to light up his AC controls. He told me that he hit one of the wires sticking out of the panel that is connected to the tiny bulb that operates his air recirculation button with his soldering iron and he said that the wire did not split only burned a little, but now that button does not work, and neither does his rear defroster. He asked me what I thought it was and I think that he could have shorted something and messed up his computer. Only possible solutions to this problem or ideas of what could have happened? He said he also checked all the fuses and they were all fine, I told him to check his ECU to see if anything burned, and he told me everything was fine. Any ideas?

I dont know, Maybee use a multi meter and check that you are getting some reading from that wire/lead. Ive never had that type of issue but that is the first place that you should look.

sounds like a fuse to me, they put goofy things together, kinda like the dome light and stereo on one fuse... tell him to look in the owners manual and figure out which fuse controls those things and he should have a winner.. dont forget to check both fuse boxes one under hood and one under the dash... i seriouslyt doubt it got to the ecu that easily, ive done some pretty dumb things while tinkering around and caused lots of sparks and lots of burnt wires..........

my friend just got back from mitsubishi, they said that it is his computer. they said that his computer is messed up, and that his compressor wire is freezing. what a coincidence right liquid7879. that must be mitsu's solution to everything today

I would say not to say anything about what happend and see if they replace it underwaranty.....

But I have never heard of the AC controls being connected Directly to the ECU. Unless there is a seperate ECU for temp controls. I could be wrong here.

very interesting. Id like to see the outcome..........??

Dude if you pay get the old parts back and send it out to see if it can be repaired. Then you can at least sell it and not loose so much money..

But dont you think if the ECU was fried it wouldnt be just isolated to the AC controls? pretty weird if you ask me..... Ive burned lots of coputer boards with shorts and they almost never halfway work. if the short was big enough to kill part of your ecu it would be big enought to kill your whole ECU unless there is a sepearate one for AC controls...Dont know.

liquid you have been most helpful, but you were referring to me, this is my friends car i am talking about, i called infinity to send mitsu the facts that say that the tweeters couldnt have interferred with my ecu, but my friend actually messed his up so it is all his fault and he will probably have to pay in full for it. i did argue for countless hours with mitsu and i told the dealer that if there was a magnetic field created by my speakers then not only would those buttons not work but most likely all of the controls surrounding them, my friend ont he other hand will have a harder time explaining his situationa nd trying to get it under warranty

What ever you do get their statement in writing.. if the service manager wont back it up in writing then go to the GM of the dealer and also the mitsu rep.............!!! They tried the same kind of BS with MY gst when a radiator hose blew they said it was cuase of my mods etc.... but they ended up replacing it for me...lol

The only way i can see you speakers causing an issue with the ECU is if the speaker wires some how touched the ECU cables and caused a short.... Not very likely..

Goog luck.

lol.....yes i told the dealer the same thing, and he accused me of touching my negative to a ground and i asked him if he thought i was that dumb. i explained to him how i know way more than he can ever understand about audio equipment, but he did have me boggled about the whole magnetic field thing because I never really thought about that when i was installing systems. i can understand if maybe i had a magnet the size of a woofers (even a small one) near my controls, but still it wouldnt make too much sense to me. i am bringing my car tomorrow to a guy in new jersey i trust for a second opinion to see if he can locate the problem more precisely. who knows maybe mitsu is right, but i highly doubt it. i also tried to explain to the dealer that i had extensive work done on my AC in the summer and it is probably connected to it. I went to the dealer 6 times in august to fix my ac. They had to clean out all the pipes, order a new clutch, a new blower, and new belts, but regardless the dealer swore to me that these problems could not be connected. I also noticed just before that not only did I get grease all over my jeans from the dumb *** working on my car this morning, but they forgot to put the plastic pieces back on near the upper right corner of the passenger side, they got grease all over the ceiling of my car, and my floormats regardless that i have rubber ones down, and they somehow managed to fool around with my headunit and all of its memory is cleared unless they disconnected the negative of my battery.
