2003 Lancer ES Intense Rattling When Stopped (Automatic)
2003 Lancer ES Intense Rattling When Stopped (Automatic)
Hey guys, I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES, for the past few months I've notice the motor and or trans of my lancer has been rattling minorly, but recently it started to get REALLY BAD. My Lancer has an automatic transmission. When I stop at a light or stop sign, the front end of my car begins to rattle SUPER bad now, the whole car begins to shake and there is a very loud rattling noise. It will rattle for as long as I am stopped and in "D" (Drive), if I throw the car into neutral at a stop when the noise/rattling is happening, the noise/rattling COMPLETELY stops, and th car acts normal again.
The car drive absolutely great, no problems going through all the gears, transmission very very rarely slips (It's happened once, but the car was cold and I was getting onto the freeway)
I'm leaning towards the motor mounts of my lancer as the culprit for the rattling. Since it only happens when the motor is engaged to the trans and power is going to the wheels, there is torque on the motor in D, so it rattles on the bad mounts. When the car is in N, it does not rattle because there is no torque on the motor since it is not working to spin the car's wheels.
I may be wrong, it may not be the motor mounts. Has anyone with a 2003 lancer es ever had this problem? I would hope someone who has experienced and resolved the same thing is part of the evolutionm community and could help me out.
Thanks!

check the flywheel to torque convert. bolts , also check the front crossmember that runs underneath the car especially at the front radiator support where it bolts...unfortunetly its common for that to rust putting pressure on the other mounts ...My 2002 has 135k on it with stock mounts and no issues
Same issue with wife's ES
Exactly the same issue with my wife's 2003 ES. Did you ever figure out what the issues was?
