check engine light after k&n intake.. please help!
Hey all you engine wiz out there. I need a desperate help on my 09 lancer es sport! I suddenly have a engine light that came on today TWICE! The only mod I have made to my car is a SRI v1 of RRM which I replaced the filter with a K&N one model RU-4950. Before when I had the RRM with the stock RRM intake, I get no problem with the engine light at all until recently 3 days ago I made a change to the K&N filter since everyone said K&N is better than RRM!
The first time the check engine light came on, I went to autozone for them to test it, and said the code is "engine too lean" which on their print out means ignition issue, fuel injector not clean, engine issue, and one more thing or so I forgot. The guy then gave me the Lucas fuel injector cleaner and cleared out the code. Couple hours later it came on again!!!
Is the problem with this K&N filter of mine or is something else wrong
Before I ran my car on the street, I let it idle for 10-15 minute on the K&N filter so the ECU can learn the new air flow just like some suggests on this site.
I'm really worried about this because I don't want the dealer to charge me out the @ss to fix this issue, so should I put on the original stock intake and take it to them to take a look at it since it's still under warranty? Instead of leaving the SRI with the K&N on since they will say that I did something to my car so that I voided warranty?
Please give me some inputs on this so I know what to do and the right way to go about fixing this trouble!!!
P.S. I inserted the K&N in as much as I could to the RRM piping but it's not all the way in as in past the rubber flange of the K&N but it still clamp in tight. Is this the possible problem if it's not all the way into the rubber part so that there should be nothing but air surround the piping?
Thank you so much for your help!!!!! I am really appreciated and always love to learn from you guys here are very helpful!

Im sorry to add that I have a automatic 09 lancer es sport, and I don't drive the car hard at all! When I accelerate from stop I usually never go past 4000rpm and time to time when passing cars, that's when I rev past 5000 rpm but never close to redline it! I want to give all information as possible so that way I don't leave anything out to help solve this to avoid all dealer issue and cost!
put your stock intake and take it to the ealer to see what they say .. you don't have to paid anything just go and see what then can do that is you have other mods you can't put back to stoc then your fxck because your warrnty will be void...
wat do u mean jackevox, you said put back to stock but then you said cant put back to stock because im ***? anyways more input please.... or i might just take it to the dealer after installing the stock intake today to see what they have to say!

if the k&n isnt fitting as well as the RRM filter did then thats the problem,
try this take off the k&n put the RRM filter back on, before you do th is disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. then let the car sit for 15-25 minutes and put the negative terminal back on and start it up...see if the code comes back, if it comes back right away as soon as teh car is started go to autozone and have them clear it again and wait to see if it comes back.
I put the stock filter on and went to the dealer, they take a look and said looks like someone been messing with the filter and maybe cause a vaccuum leak :P but they didn't say anything about I have voided warranty. But then he said he looked and found nothing wrong with any piping or whatsoever on the car engine nor the pipes of anything.
The k&n filter do fit on the rrm piping but it just doesn't go al the way in, it goes about halfway in and with the screw rings, the connection are very tight fit because I can see the mark it made on the rubber flange of the k&n! So I don't think there's any leak there.
A member on the forum said the k&n might be putting too much air in and the ECU isn't designed to accept this much air flow on the ES engine!? Also he said the placement of the MAF on the k&n typhoon pipe is different from the placement on the RRM which simulates the stock one more. The rrm intake filter has a cone in the middle so air CFM is less than the k&n which has nothing in the middle and allowing more air to be sucked in. I don't know if this actually causes the check engine light to go on or not but it seems like a logical reason isn't it? Too much air flow?
lancer0220, why do i have to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery? Also is it save to start the car and let it idle for 15-25 minute with the rrm intake filter back on?

I know... sorry! how do I resize the pictures? I just press attach pic and enter the link from the host site! Anyways should that 1mm of rubber sticking out in the k&n make a dif to the air flow making my CEL comes on?
Okay, so I installed my AEM dry filter on my RRM v1 and drove around for a bit, even did a little touch and go with some random BMW 3 something. Still no check engine light....yet. How long did it take for you to get it? I made sure to do some hard pulls too.
your lancer gts 08 should be the same as my es sport 09.... i haven't tried AEM dry filter because I know it is not good as k&n and I don't know which one fits on the rrm v1.... the engine light came on about an hour after i start my car the second time having it on after idling for about 2 hour.
You should be aware that some SRI's purposely let unmetered air pass by, so that they can lean out the fuel mixture. That's a very crude way of leaning out your fuel mixture and sometimes it causes a lean condition and you get an engine code. That's what probably happened to you.
