clunky lancer shifting
clunky lancer shifting
hey, this thread was posted in the Evo forum but I thought it would be better to respond/post it here since evo owners can sometimes be of little help to Lancer owners
Anyway I notice tha my shifting feels poppy, clunky, or notchy sometimes and I don't know how to explain it. It happens when the car is cold (I know cold gear box oil has something to do with it) but aslo it happens if I have been driving for awhile.
When I shift from 1st to 2nd, I notice that it pops or feels notchy on the upshift, especially when I wind it up to about 5,000 rpms. I am an experienced manual driver and even though sometimes I get lazy with the clutch, it even happens when Im concentrating on NOT doing it.
Also, from 2nd to third, at lower rpms, I notice that even when the clutch is pressed to the firewall, there is some grinding!
Has anyone experienced this or know what is going on? Is it a synchro or linkage problem? I took it to a Mitsu dealer and all they did was check the tranny fluid for shaving which they found none.
Anyone's help is greatly appreciated.

I have noticed this problem, but not while upshifting. If I am rolling to a stop, I will sometimes push the clutch and to put it into first(with the clutch still depressed) until I have stopped and then start driving. When I put it into first it is clunky and I meet alot of resistance and hear a slight griding even though the clutch is down, but this is only if I am rolling. If I put it in first from a stop I don't feel this, otherwise I have no tranny problems.
My 1st gear release does that too, but I've found that I was just being a little too "quick" with the throw. I was shifting before the clutch was in far enough. As for the 2nd gear problem, I have noticed it mostly on cold mornings. It does seem to grind a bit even though the clutch is all the way in. It does this for the first 4-5 shifts into 2nd and then it is fine for the rest of the day. It feels to me like the synchros aren't working properly until the tranny warms up a bit. What I've been doing lately to sort of prevent it is to double clutch for the first couple shifts and then it's fine.
i have the noticed the same thing. this is my first mitsubishi, so naturally i took it to the dealer to see whats up. heres what they told me..... they told me that shifting from 1st to 2nd gear is VERY exact. meaning, basically you have to get the shift 100% accurate (the clutch has to be FULLY in before you even BEGIN to move the shifter to 2nd) in order to avoid the notchy feeling. this only applies to 1st to 2nd. i then asked if making the shifts notchy were bad, they said its no big deal at all..... the clutch will not be affected by it. just normal wear thats all. the reason for this they said, is that certain models from mitsubishi have "sportier" transmissions. they told me the evo, lancer, galant, and the eclipses... have these transmissions. i told him that my sister let me drive her 95 mirage, and nothing like this ever happened. he told me that back then, the mirage's didnt have the sporty transmission so thats why it didnt do that. apparently these transmissions are sportier.
as for grinding from 2nd to 3rd, i've never had that problem. that for sure does not sound good for the transmission. even on cold mornings when i'm running late, my trans does not do that at all. you should ask the dealer about that. hope this helps.

i have found that if I sort pull the shifter close to me (to the left) while shifting from 1st to 2nd (not too hard) It sort of reduced the clunkyness and feels smoother.
It kinda bites that mitsu didnt make a more forgiving clutch, especially from 1st to 2nd but I still love my lancer

This was covered a while back during the initial "lets feel out the car phase" in late '01/early' 02. The problem with the 1-2/2-1 throw really has a lot to do with the fact that the car is not syncro'd between those gears.
could you post a link to that thread? thanks
the other thing i wanted to say was in regards to the grinding with the clutch in from 2 to 3, it seems to happen when i shift slowly. With a quicker shift I dont seem to notice it as much.

My only problem is going from 1st to 2nd gear during hard acceleration. It seems like the tranny gets misaligned under high torque. I have grinded 2nd gear probably 4-5 times now (when it was stock and after mods) and I cringe everytime it happens and ask for forgiveness from my lovely car. I had an M3 with similar complaint after power modification but stiffer transmission bushings helped ensure that tranny doesn't move.
I have heard of other local Evo drivers doing the same thing. When not under hard acceleration I don't have any problem with it. I have never driven a DSM before but after 18 years of driving stick shift machines, I tend to think that I know how to shift into 2nd gear. From my reading and talking to people, this is probably not an isolated incident. Hopefully someone comes up with a fix soon... in the mean time I'll try not to grind it.
If the EVO shifts like the S2000... we all would be in EVO shift heaven.

Well, sometimes i get that problem too, mine is mostly going from 2nd to 1st tho, i start to roll to a stop sign or roll around a turn in 2nd and i wanna drop it into first and the thing just doesn't wanna go, then when you force it, even w/ the clutch in, it trys to throw the shifter back out and you hear some grind, its crazy stuff, and it doesn't always happen either, aside from that i like my tranny
same here sometimes im even scare to shift. i went to the dealer and they test drove it and they told me that the car was fine and that they can't take the car in if it's fine but i still have the same problem. (i say they are just scare of trasmission because they know how expensive they are)
