Radiator Fans not kicking on

2006 ES Lancer

Well today i noticed my car had a strong smell of anti-freeze and i look under the hood and see whats going on. I look around and see there's no leaks but I could smell the anti-freeze still. So I look at my fans and notice they're pretty dirty (like they haven't moved for a bit) so I stand there and wait for my fans to kick on for a few minutes and they don't start. So I drive down the highway more and stop to watch the fans again and still nothing. So I check my fuses and relays and notice some empty spots. I just want to know what the problem might be. Here is a pic of my relays/ fuses. I see a lot of empty spots. I've never checked the relay box until now. I received the car from the factory this way. Did the dealership miss a few. If so how is my car able to drive.

PS The first time I checked the fans I was driving on the highway about 45 minutes so the car was warmed up.

maybe your thermastat is not working correctly?

either way, i dont think its good for you to drive highway for 45 minutes with no fans on. careful.

the relays look the same. I have the same one as you. Maybe I'll check the fans with the AC on. It was only 20 degrees when I was driving so maybe thats why they didn't kick on but it really smelled like anti-freeze. I don't see any leaks but there is some dried anti-freeze on top of the radiator near the cap. It looks like it evaporated and then settled there tho. If the fans dont kick on i might try some slim fans. I'm looking to turbo in the future anyway Thanks for the pic of your relays.

Well I found some antifreeze today and this is where its coming from. It leaks out of the top and just drys up on the top of the radiator. Its not a bad leak but its still a leak. Has anyone had this problem? I can still smell the antifreeze from it once in a while. How would I fix this? The top pic is a small pool of antifreeze and the second pic is where its been going to and dying up. SORRY FOR THE PHONE PICS.

Any ideas about the leak? Can it be fixed or should I just replace it? I've been looking at the Megan radiator on RRM's site. Has anyone tried it yet?

you might as well replace the radiator, looks like that seal is busted.

Jeff,

Thanks, I was afraid of that. I guess I'll give the megan racing radiator a try. I might as well get some slim fans while I'm at it.

1Lancer,

I just decided to replace my radiator, hoses, and thermostate. I'm also going to be putting some slim fans on as well (get the fans out of the way for future boosting). My leak is coming from the radiator. I looked over the hoses and the cap and didnt see any leaking around them. I just ordered the megan radiator on RRM's site. I plan on replacing my radiator when the weather clears up. Im gunna be getting projectors and HID's so I figured I'd do it all while the bumper is off

radiator was 260 shipped, I still need fans, hoses, and thermostat. The thermostate and gasket are about 25 bucks. The upper and lower hoses range from 15 to 20 bucks. I'll probably be getting some projectors before the snow melts here so I'll be putting it all in at the same time

Questions guys, Is there a difference in the lower radiator hoses between a automatic and a manual? I've noticed my lower hose looks more "L' shaped than the other lower hoses. I've seen one site with option between a lower hose for a automatic and manual. The upper hose looks the same tho.
