Funny Water Temp. Gauge
I have a 2008
lancer 1.6 GLX.
In the first few days when I got it I noticed that the temp gauge jumps from below the "c" to its lower edge after few seconds of idling, then runs smoothly afterward.
When I did my 1000 km maintenance they checked it & assured me it's purely normal as long as the needle runs smoothly & readings are accurate.
All went well till about 1.5 year ago when I noticed that when I turn off the ignition the temp gauge needle doesn't drop down as the gas needle. Since I wasn't sure if it was like this before or it's a new condition (I have a very bad memory) & because a friend of mine (who owned 1998 lancer) told me it's normal & explained it as "the gauge reads the actual temp. so it won't fall down till it cools down", & when I turn the ignition on again all goes normally, so I paid no attention to it.
2 weeks ago, in a very hot day & a very bad traffic I noticed the needle is all the way down & not moving. No matter what I do, turn the ignition off or on, or turn the A/C on or off, it still frozen. I checked the water level, OK, fans were working normally & no warning lights at all.
Gentle tapping on the instruments cluster made the needle jump up but as if it's stuck in something, but still won't move.
I went to the dealer workshop who examined it & told me they tried to fix it, but if it recurred, I should consider changing ..... THE WHOLE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
!!!......(which is very expensive by the way)....
It worked fine for a couple of days the started to stay up after turning the ignition off as before.
This time I noticed its behavior carefully. It goes down to zero after the car cools down. If I turn the ignition on, it drops down with the 1st step of ignition then runs normally. If I turn the ignition off & it stays up & I turn the 1st step of the ignition so it drops down to zero & I turn off, it stays down like normal, & when I turn it on it behaves normally.
If I took a real short trip so the car didn't get really hot & I turn it off, it drops down normally.
I think it's heat related..
Is this a sensor or gauge problem?
What are the available solutions ?
thank did any one had similar problem? what did he do?
Thank you very much & sorry for being long.
