Question Timing Belt/Chain?

Hello Everyone,

First off, I apologize if this has been answered before. After searching, I found the answer for other models or variants but nothing I read to hit my model, unless I've missed it somewhere.

I'm now an owner of a 2012 Lancer ES. I was wondering if it has a timing belt or chain. It's just hitting the 98k mile mark, so I know the 100k+ maintenance checkup is coming up. I am showing my MPG screen and I have a small triangle in the upper corner. (not my dash, but same icon). Everything I read online says timing issue, I'm about to go back to the dealer and would like to know what I'm heading into, before I get there.

I've always owned older more simple motors, Jeep/Ford/Pontiac. This is my first import so I'm new to this side.

So I took it to the dealership, they hooked it up to the computer. They said it had no errors or warnings, nothing was overheating, the cvt tests came back all clear. I got home and disconnected the battery for over five minutes, still have that damn triangle showing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a chain.

Now the light... possible that it could be a bad or dirty sensor (for the timing). I'm surprised the dealer wasn't able to find anything. Did you point out the light to them? Or was it off at the time? I'd take it somewhere else and get a 2nd opinion.

It was on and I pointed it out to them. I have it going in on next Wednesday. I'll suggest they look at the sensor to see if cleaning it will fix it.

Where is the sensor located? Is it in a place I could get to with relative ease, maybe clean it myself?

Thanks for the help!
